They are made from different kinds of fruits and different grapes. Syrah is a lot drier, so if you like that, then choose that one. The merlot is a lot more palatable, so most people prefer it. But try both; decide for yourself.

The difference is matter of preference more than anything. I like syrah most times, but would go for merlot if the wine was right and the syrah was nt so good in that bottle.
If you are really in a toss-up decideing the two, why not go for a syrah/merlot comination?
Or else buy a cab (cabernet sauvinon), since that is the most preferred red wine, all things considered.
In any case, you might want to go to a wine tasting and see for yourself. Most places that sell wine have tastings, usually on the weekends, and only a couple dollars per taste.

entirely depends on which you like better, what you are eating, where it is from. Syrah/Shiraz (same thing different origin). Syrah is more food friendly than Merlot. Australia and New Zealand make some great ones.
Merlot is hard...as somebody above mentioned, good ones are hard to find. Personally in terms of dryness, I think Merlot is drier than Syrah.

I prefer syrahs because they tend to be more full-bodied and jammy. I have tried a few higher end merlots that were great. Merlots tend to be more mellow, so if you're not used to drinking red wine, merlot may be a good start.

a good merlot is great but not so good merlots are kind of crappy. a syrah/shiraz other than having idenitity crisises is more drinkable as a supermarket wine from australia. avoid the calfornia wines at almost all costs. a good merlot should have a hearty autumn/woodsy flavor -- most merlot just tastes like a weak version of a more full bodied red though. syrah/shiraz is acutally considered one of the most full bodied red wines and should be served warmer than any other wine -- 65 degrees fahrenheit. while its cool for us its warm for a cellar in france.
if you like red wines go with a pinot noir -- they are good at inexpensive prices as italian imports. i like spanish tempranillos too -- you can't get better quality at under 10 bucks a bottle. spanish and portuguese wines are very underpriced in my opinion.
