Asked this one once before but didn't get the answer I was looking for, just a lot of "AK47 rules" or "M16 #1", so here it goes again. What is overall the best modern assault rifle produced currently and why? Any country, cost not being a factor.

Of the weapon's I've personally fired here are my top picks the US's XM8 or M4, UK's SA80, Germany's HK G36, I have fired all of these at the range and have carried all but the XM8 in combat. Stay away from Russian junk. It last forever and is 7.62 but you need a whole magazine to hit anything. Never used one in combat but have fought against many..... I'm the one still typing. I personally can't wait to get a FN SCAR.

Well it not the AR 15 or the famous M16/A1/A2 rifle even though it has a max range of 3534m; point target range of 550m(head shot); area target range of 800m(body shot) and a 5.56mm bullet that tumbles in the body creating more damage that any other round it's size. It is the AK 47 rifle made available in 1947 by the Russian Military and was and part of the Russian Big 7 (T72, SVD7 sniper rifle, ZSU 23-4 etc) There are now many different version of the rifle today with different size and types of 7.62mm rounds from the original Russian version to versions from China, Vietnam, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Iran India, Africa and other countries that I can't remember. The AK47 has 3 main parts, bolt and Carrier, upper receiver and lower receiver which makes it easy to clean and gives it a 99.9998% chance of jamming, it can also be fired under water, with sand or dirt in the chamber. It is as loud as a 240B (Army Dismount Weapon) and as accurate as a sling shot due to it's muzzle velocity, range and components. Best use in close combat operations.

There are too many assault rifles around. Most are chambered for 5.56mm SS109 round or soviet 5.45mm, if you are talking about modern assault rifles in the last decade or so. Seriously, there are no best assault rifles as it has it's pros and cons, thou' there are really some lousy rifles out there. Best bets are the HK G36, HK 416, Colt M16A2, IMI Galil, Steyr AUG, FAMAS or STK SAR21. Personally, M16 later models are great except for the frequent maintenance and cleaning required. A M16's accuracy is outstanding in semi-auto, but the light weight affects accuracy on full-auto as the barrel tends to climb.

AK47. It is reliable and will fire even after the worst abuse. Only problem it is allot heaver than say the M16 and that includes the ammo. When you have too carry everything you own that is a very big factor.

I take a lot of critism for this view, Ar-15. The reasons are beyond dispute. They are very light. They are more accurate than AK or SKS. The ammo is also ligher, the whole gun is lighter. Which gun would you want to carry 20 miles through the mud? This is about the only gun my dad doesn't have so they always argue.

i collect and own several class III HK, from 5.56 to 7.62 including the MP5 suppressed, both in 9m/m and 10, my best overall is the M1a1 (M14) in the M21 configurations best weapon my favorite since the rice paddies of Vietnam as for ak and AR 15 the like shove them in the creek worthless my MP5 in 10m/m does better job to 100 meters no better round then a 30 cal knows no bundaries always get the job done to 1000 meters

Anything 7.62; that used to be the old NATO standard ammunition. You can hide behind that brick wall but a 7.62 will still go through it. Not so the smaller caliber in vogue in many western military forces today.
