My dad has had cancer for over 7 years. I know hes not going to be here forever. I am going to be 20 and there has been so much more. This has been alot to deal with from the daughtors perspective. I have been told I am so strong for dealing with everything the way I have, but I think I need something more. What is out there for people dealing with family and cancer? Psychologist? Groups? What has worked? I have thought about talking to a psychologist or something but I dont know if thats what I need.....im so confused.

Hi Katie, I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I think you have a good head on your shoulders and are strong for asking for ideas on how to deal with things. Yahoo has alot of different groups for families and cancer. You should talk to other people in your same situation, they can shed fresh light on ideas. I'm a survivor myself, at the same time I had my cancer, my best friend did too, she died, then after I recovered my dad had bladder cancer. It's scary. 7 years is a good record for having cancer and it's getting to the stage that alot of people just "live with cancer" like you do with diabetes, asthma, and other problems so although no one is here forever, he has a good chance for more years with the new clincial trials and treatments coming out each day. But just knowing he has it is hard, and you should be in a support group of some sort. A pastor can help, catholic charities has free counselling services, psychologists can help, groups can help, you have to try and see where you feel the most comfortable.

What type of cancer? There are many support groups, check with your local hospital and/or family MD. If you think talking to a psychologist or psychiatrist would be helpful, don't hesitate - it doesn't mean you're mentally ill, it means you need someone to help you and someone you can speak confidentially with about your inner most thoughts.

One of my parents also had cancer - after 7 years, they were considered a survivor and are still around now after nearly 20 years.

The more you understand about the type of cancer, the more you can deal with the situation.

It also sounds like you need a break - please take some time off and relax.

My mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer 5 years ago. I was 19 years old at the time. It is such an emotional roller coaster. Its constantly up and down . My mother is to the point she is always in pain, she has become very mean and has so much hatred towards everyone in her family for no reason. The thing that I would say that has helped me most is counseling. I really reccomend you do so. It's important for you to take care of yourself too.
I wish you the best of luck !

I know that there are support groups available for people who have relatives and friends that have cancer. Ask at the hospital, they should be able to point you in the right direction. Also, don't forget to ask your faith leader for help, they can offer alot in the way of help and support, and usually that is free. Good luck to you and your father, God Bless you and your family.

my grandma died when my dad was only 11. It devastated him. The only thing I think that helped him was knowing that his mom was in a better place and not suffering anymore. She was living with it for about 8 years and the doctors at that time thought she would only live for about 2. Everyone deals with this differently. I would spend what time you have left with your dad and see where that leads you

Don't buy into the orthodox view, it is a curable dis-ease yet the cures are suppressed by the pharmacutical companies because a healthy person doesnt represent money to them (sickos), go here www.4life.com a woman here was cured of it by their products and so was a friend of mine who was about to have a late stage gangreen leg cut off. Also search cancer cure with hydrogen peroxide endorsed by Dr. Christian Barnard ( the first heart transplant surgeon) this works also. (if you cant find it mail me and i'll send it to you).

Good luck and have faith and never give up like the others did.

Katie... there is counseling for this. Go to your doctor and seriously tell him/her that you need a group therapy. Hopefully your doctor will Know what to do. Mine suggested group therapy for my problem I had to overcome. Good luck.
