Joining the military is a responsible decision for a patriot. The things you need to know are, it's not an easy life, but it can be rewarding. Before you go to the recruiter have an ideal of what job you would like to do. Read as much as you can about the job. Go to www.staynavy.navy.mil you can find out lots of information about different navy jobs. When you get to MEPS, make sure you get your job you qualify for on paper. Also ask about Navy College fund, it is money for college, not the same as Montgomery G.I. Bill. Make sure you get it in writting before you sign anything. Remember, nothing is guaranteed unless it's on paper. Any bonus for enlistment, any job training. It has to be in the elistment paperwork for it to be good. Recruiters might only tell you the good things, be ready for some bad to come with it. You have to work hard for advancement, study and learn. See what jobs in the Navy are advancing. Advancement depends on how full the job is also.

In general if I had to give a tip? 1) Learn how to swim. It amazes me how many don't think (navy+ships=water) They est swim skills in basic. Trips up many. 2) Be in good shape. Start jogging, doing sit ups and push ups. If you can ace the Pt, the rest is easy. 3) Choose a good rate. It will depend on your asvab score, but try for a job you think may suit you or may pay off down the road like a Avation mechcanic or air traffic controller.

As a mother of a son serving in the Armed Services I'm begging you to re-think this choice. I don't know about your family but every time I hear the news I hold my breath and run to the computer to look up latest casualties.

well my brother in law is in the navy in the UK, as long as you research and inform yourself fully about the good and bad things about it before you sign that "HA, we OWN your *** for FOUR years" document, you should be ok....
and my ADVICE to you would be....er try not to have any little accidents with the like nuclear weapons on there and you should do ok...oh yes and remember not to make HOLES in things...(especially the hull)
have fun Taco! :-P
