The main reason people still smoke is that it is legal.

As a smoker for over 36 years, I caution anybody out there that smokes to fit in, be cool or whatever, stop before it is too late. I really want to quit and have tried everything on the market to do so but never anything more than a pause in smoking happens. I am fully aware of the dangers but it is like being a heroin addict for some people. I know at this point that my death will probably be because of the effects of this disgusting habit. There is hope that I can quit now that they have a new drug on the market that turns off the part of the brain that feels the enjoyment of smoking. Wish me luck and thanks for making people aware in this ongoing campaign to get people to not only not to smoke but not to even start.

I do not know why. People who smoke should start thinking about their health. A women I work with smokes a pack a day and she is in her last trimester of pregnancy. That poor baby. I guess when one has smoke for so long and has no will power, it is such a habit that one can't control, just like alcoholics, bulimics, gamblers, etc. I quit smoking two years ago when I found out I was pregnant and so happy that I did not go back. I feel so great and do not get as sick (colds, bronchitis, etc) like I did when I smoked. More importantly, I want to be around for my son in the future as well as any future children I may have.

It's not true that smokers don't care....
They do. I know because I am one. Addiction is deadly. You can give me all the scary facts you want but my body will subconsciously light up a cigarette when I'm not thinking about it.
It's hard to explain but don't ever think that smokers are unaware of the risk.... we live in fear of it every day.
I am so addicted to cigarettes that if I go too long without one I become very hostile and mean spirited. I do not like this about myself and so I keep smoking in order to get along in society...
It always seems like a better option to smoke one more cigarette than to lose my job or my best friend just because I was having a nicotine craving and went crazy....

They just want to try it. They honestly don't think they will become addicted. Even when they believe they might become addicted they think that quitting wouldn't be that hard. They tell themselves it's just a phase and they won't smoke forever and that they'll definately stop before they've done any "real" damage. There is no way for a non-smoker to ever know what it's like to be addicted to it. They cannot understand until they try to quit. I have friends who were long-term drug addicts and they've said quitting smoking was much harder than kicking heroin.

I quit 31/2 years ago, I smoked close to 3 packs a day.
I ended up in the hospital with a collapsed lung.
Nothin' like a chest tube to make you re-think things.

For me, its a great stress relief. Of course, for me.. i'm a divorced/ single parent, with boys (one being a teenager) and working all day long, never being around for them. My older boy takes care of my younger one.. i have guilt feelings, because he shouldnt have to. It should be me, raising my children. Not one child rising the other. But, i have to work..its life. And it gets very stressful. And the guilt sometimes gets overwhelming... and smoking helps take the edge off for me between that and work. I know its no excuse, for my bad habits..but its better than taking drugs. I despise drugs, especially in my case. So, this works for me...

I've asked some guys, and most of them say they just smoke when they are stress, but look like they smoke everytime they want, not stress, look like they kill time by smoking

Probably for the same reason that some people are obese. Addictions are horrible things - I know I am addicted to the internet! People know that its not good for them, but its mentally too hard for them to let go
