I'm teaching a home school course tomorrow on how to build a fire, and I am looking for interesting techniques. I already have instructions on how to start a fire using a soda can and a chocolate bar, or a condom and some water, or an ice lens, or a bow drill, or steel wool and a 9 volt battery. Are there any other cool techniques that kids (ages 7-10) might enjoy?

[In light of the age group, I won't be demonstrating the condom and water technique... I'd like to avoid parent phonecalls.]

Sounds like you already have some fantastic ideas! I personally like the soda can and chocolate bar method. I have to admit, I'd never heard of it until you mentioned it. Now, I look forward to trying it.

Don't forget flint. That's an effective and popular method.
You don't necessarily need the 9-Volt battery with steel wool, I've seen it done with flashlight batteries.
You can still do the condom and water, just use a clear balloon (if you can find one).

I'd stay away from chemicals for that age group.

We often learned new ways 2 start fire in Scouts. Soda can & chocolate bar? That's new. Oily rags spontaneously combust? OK too dangerous. Plug many apliances into socket? Leave lit cigaret on bed / chair cushion? Lightening rod - during storm. Liked the different lenses used 2 magnify the sun - condom? Yeah, I have some spares. Ice ? Prescrip / magnifying Glass ?

condom &water???? Huh?

Magnesium firestarter. found in most sporting good stores. Take knife and shave slivers of ther metal. On the side is a flint bar. Strike the bar to create sparks to ignite the magnesium.

rubbing 2 sticks together. Or one they would really enjoy, is to hold a magnifing glass under the sun and have it shine on a sheet of paper. Hold it there a few minutes.
