How do home schoolers get a high school deploma? Do you just have to get a GED?

Actually, in most states a GED is no longer required. Most states now require either annual standardized testing or evaluation by a certified teacher no matter what grade the homeschoolers are in. The final year, the parents simply inform the superintendent that the requirements have been met and the student has graduated. A college placement test and SAT/ACT scores are sufficient for college entrance. I graduated homeschool 6 years ago and am now working on a doctorate and I never took the GED.

Each state has their own rules about homeschool "graduation". There are also several programs (on-line and traditional textbook-based) that offer diplomas upon completion of their requirements.

Where we live, I can order a fancy diploma from any of a number of printshops. We are not required to take/give any test to graduate. Our local homeschool group offers a graduation ceremony, complete with "the walk" across the stage, family in the audience, cap/gowns, and all the "Pomp and Circumstance".

As someone has already mentioned, many homeschool groups discourage students from taking the GED because of the "drop-out" stigma attached to it. Most colleges are now very accepting of homeschoolers and don't require 'diplomas', but you still need to complete the required standardized tests (SAT and/or ACT) for acceptance.

TO MIKE C: perhaps this question was asked by a public school student interested in bettering themselves through home education. Either way, it's nice to know you've NEVER made a spelling error.

Here goes...
You make it. And no it isn't fake. You earn as much credit as the people in public school. You write the transcript up and when you have enough credit you graduate. You then make a diploma. I designed mine and it looks beautiful. You can find templates online for them. You are not required to get a GED. You did complete high school so a GED is unneeded and doesn't look quite as good as a diploma. Whoever taught you and whoever was the "principle" signs it. Keep you high school transripts until you get at least an associate degree so if anyone questions you (and they will) you can prove you have taken classes. Also keep some of the work (written work like math tests, english papers, etc) around to prove it as well. So far the only questioning I have received when people see my diploma is 'Where is that school?" My reply is always "My bedroom." Even the Texas Department of Transportation has accepted my diploma as proof of graduation (I graduated early and they wanted proof before they renewed my DL). So you make it on the computer. Just check you state laws; I live in Texas and Texas considers homeschool a private school. And yes all universities are required to accept as long as you have transcripts and proof (not hard to have) Oh and make sure your parents or whoever homeschooled you names the school. And don't purchase it online. Its just added money. My parents named mine. Good Luck! Happy graduation! Viva la Homeschooling!

No, you do not have to get a GED. Some actually encourage homeschoolers to stay away from the GED because of the attached stigma.

It will depend on a person's needs and where they live. In much of the US, a parent-provided diploma and the SAT's is all you need to get into post-secondary. Here in Canada, things are a little more complicated. Parents can't legally provide official diplomas--the provincial and territorial governments do. Those who want the diploma do what they need to to get it. Those who don't want the diploma simply say they've graduated high school after they finish their equivalent of a grade-12 year.

You do not *have to* get a diploma or a GED unless the job or college that you want requires it.

What you do *have to * get is a good education. You need to study to advance yourself in knowledge and in skills. The best thing that you can do is master the basics. Study math with a view of 100% accuracy, writing for proficiency and reading for a life-time. Do your very best every day plus more!

Take the college entrance SAT and ACT to prove yourself to any institute of higher learning. Take a placement test to enter a community college. Prove to yourself and to others that you can do the work and progress from one level to another.

Many home-school groups put together formal graduations in the Spring. Some use cap and gowns others are more casual. The students write and deliver speeches and the parents present diplomas. It is very dignified and fun too.

I think it depends. I was home schooled and I ended up getting a GED because the college I wanted to go to did not recognize the program I used and I was better off with a GED. But, if you have an accredited program that is recognized by the college that you want to go to, you shouldn't have to get a GED.

Yes, you need to take and pass the GED.

Here are a couple of sites where you can buy diplomas but that does not mean that they will be recognized for college admission.

There is nothing mysterious about the homeschool diploma. As the administrator of your home school, you set the requirements for graduation. When you determine that your children have met those requirements, you issue a diploma to certify that fact.

Some families choose to enroll their children in an umbrella school or a correspondence school that offers a diploma program, and several states offer programs for homeschoolers to gain a state-accredited diploma. However, there are many who desire more educational freedom than such programs allow. By using the home school as an umbrella to encompass a wide variety of courses and educational experiences, families are able to tailor an education to the specific needs and interests of their children, and then issue their own high school diploma.

I was home schooled, I went to a home education program that was run by the local school district. I had to meet with a teacher every two weeks to turn in my work and have it graded. The teachers would keep track of credits and I had to earn just as many as I would have if I were in public school. The school district arranged a graduation ceremony and gave us diplomas the same way it would have been if I had in been in public school.
Homeschooling is not as bad as everyone makes it seem!!!
I actually liked it.
