The main wave came due to the Potato Famine (An Gorta Mór). There was also the subjugation by the London government and the land owners. Ireland was growing potatoes as all of there other crops were exported to England or other countries to pay for their rent.
The trend has now reversed and there is now net immigration between Ireland and the US.

Dito on the potato thing too and of course the same reason everyone comes to america. Poverty and a hope for a better life.
Of course, that was before our life boat became overloaded.
