I work with a lot of hispanics and some of the guys add on a "ita" to my name. Why is this?

Just a comment: Carlos G is right about Costaricans using -ico or -ica, but it doesn't work for ALL words... (as a matter of fact, is more used among older people, or in the country side)

That said... when people use the -ita/-ito, at the end of names, it's not a diminutive, they're not trying to say he/she is small, is just a "term of endearment".

Bye!

-ito, -ita, means small.

Se~n~ora means Mrs.
Se~n~orita means Miss

un perrito is a small dog

I'm sorry but -ita is also feminine.

I think it's just them being freindly, don't take it literally.

Good luck.

"Ita" I believe means little. I live on the boarder of mexico so I hear it a lot. I have a friend named "Jesusita" which is the feminine form of little jesus. It's a "cute" little thing to add on to names.

Remember the "a" is feminine and the "o" is the masculine form.
Just as Rebecca becomes Becky and Timothy goes to Timmy...

in my limited knowledge it means little, i.e.

Your name is Carlos, Little Carlos = Carlito
and with Chavo, Little Chavo= Chavito

I believe that the 'ita' is feminine, so unless your a girl, I'd be mad if they are calling you that.

As a term of endearment. Kind of like Chuck becoming Chuckie or Thomas becoming Tommy.
