Why can't you set goals for yourself and follow your own path? Why can't you accept your mistakes as your own? Is Jesus just a crutch for some people--- just an escape?

Apparently that's just too much to ask of some people, Jelly. Sad.

We can set goals and follow paths just fine. But we can do so much better when we act within God's Will. It doesn't hurt us because God's Will for us is what we are best at anyway.
But yes, Jesus does act as a 'crutch' for sinners that keep messing up. We get forgiven, which gives us a fresh opportunity to get it right next time. Life with Jesus is vibrant and exciting. Try it if you don't believe me!

because we can not do enough good on our own. no matter how hard you try you will mess up. Jesus brought us redemption. no matter how many goals we set, our own path leads us to destruction. our mistakes are our own. Jesus just made a way for our mistakes, sin, to be forgiven. Even when a person comes to Jesus, it doesn't mean that their life here on earth will now be perfect and everything will be better. you can set your own goals and follow your own path, Jesus doesn't stop you from doing that. it is your choice. but just where does your own path take you?

Your "mistakes" ARE entirely your own, but many of them are not really mistakes at all - they are deliberate sins (although some are unintentional, they are still sins).

All have sinned and the wages of sin is death (separation from God). Since wages must be paid, someone had to pay the price for you because if you tried, you would die in your sins and end up in hell. You cannot pay the price for yourself and enter heaven.

Even if you were to live the perfect life from this moment on, you would still have past sins that would have to be judged and punished by death. You cannot atone for your own sins; you need a sinless substitute. Until the first century AD, Jews used lambs, bulls, and goats, but they had to be offered repeatedly because an animal is not a suitable substitute for a human.

So Jesus came and became the perfect substitute for you and did it once for all. Because He did, he can forgive you and empower you to live as God intended you to live. No one else can do that for you.

I have chosen my own path!, I was not force to be a Christian..I accepted Christs offer to be my Lord and Savior.. in return I give him permission to help me to live a better life than I did before. I still however have the power to follow or not to follow..I choose to follow. I could have never paid the price for my sins, Jesus did that and asks for so little in return. I will gladly serve him with my whole heart all the days of my life!!!

JellyBean,

I myself had the same question in the past, but I've realized over the years that there is more out there than what we see with our eyes. We all have a spiritual side to us that was once very closely connected to God. Over time, people started drifting away from Him and we are only able to re-connect to Him by accepting Jesus as our personal Savior.

That being said, nobody can force you or sway you to believe a certain way, but as an online friend who does care about you (even though I don't know you personally), I suggest that you at least pray and ask God to reveal Himself to you. Look at it this way... if you have doubts about His existence and/or the reality of Jesus, what have you got to lose by praying... right?

I pesonally see Jesus as someone who watches my back, someone who knows how my life should best be lived so i'll be happy, and someone who cleans up after me (not in a i-can do-anything-and-God-will-forgive/help-me way, though). So Jesus is not so much a crutch as a how-to guide to life.
Besides, following your own path is like a blind person waling along the road... though he/she is doing fine but if he/she had eyes his journey would be so much easier. Thus Jesus is my eyes.

If one wants to learn a particular art or science or be a doctor, they should learn from someone who knows the art perfectly. Then then they have the chance to learn it perfectly. The same goes for spiritual knowledge. One should go to someone who has already seen the Absolute Truth. The problem is through time the scriptures become misconstrued by evil men. Krishna says in the Gita( Song of God) "Whenever there is a decline in religious principals and the truth appears to be lost, I appear again and again or send my representative to reestablish the truth." So originally the truth is their and it appears to be lost so God has to send another representative again and again. That is why there are so many religions. Hmmm, I can and I do. Jesus doesn't have anything to do with my goals or my path. Is it an escape to seek to do what Jesus asks his followers to do? Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give water to the thirsty, visit the prisoner. And to love God and our neighbors as ourselves. Pretty demanding crutch...

Being religious is no excuse for being a crappy person.

Telling people they're going to hell.
Telling people they're wrong.
Pushing views on others.
Pushing religious views on others.
Etc..

Those make the kind of person most people don't enjoy being around. No one likes being told things like that. Why would God want to take a judgemental person like that to stand next to Him? Why would ANYONE want to be around a judgemental person?

You can believe in Jesus, but if you use His name to justify what you do, you're a fool.

The only thing Jesus should do about your life... or in your life.... is to be an idol to become a better person. Not to be a Christian... not to read the bible... but idolize him in a way that would benefit yourself.

You're right though... people need to learn to be independant.

You don't have to have Jesus. You can set your own goals, establish your own values, and choose your own path. That's what free will is all about.

Unless you want to get to heaven. Then, you have to have Jesus.
