Many locations will allow a homeowner to remove up to certain amounts of asbestos with out the need for an outside specialist contractor. This does not eliminate the need for proper safety precautions(PPE) or proper disposal methods. If you are a contractor working on behalf of someone else, then my friend you fall under all of the applicable OSHA , EPA, State and Local Regulations. In which case with the cradle to grave laws in effect, you and your customer could have current and future liability issues. Not to mention the health implications if you did this abatement improperly so that the entire area is contaminated with the asbestos friables. What cradle to grave means.... Once the item stops being used as it was originally intended,it becomes a regulated waste. That's the cradle. Grave is when it is in it's final, proper resting place. There is a whole long paper trail from beginning to termination/grave as well. If this resting place is disturbed in the future, it still belongs to the owner at the time of the cradle....... All this varies on amount, type and location as well. For clearer answers contact a local Hazardous Waste company, such as Safety Kleen. They should be able to point you in the right direction for who holds authority in your area.
All that being said, I have no clue as to the scope of your work on that job. You could be really screwed, you could be just fine. Odds are though you breathed some of it in, and surely others as well. You do not want to do that. Asbestos isn't that hard to work with and can be done safely. If you think you are going to run into this again, then money spent on training is money well spent. Good luck.

Oh dear! I don't know what kind of safety precautions you took, but aspestos exposure can be dangerous; it can cause lung cancer or asbestosis, because the asbestos fibers are so tiny that they get stuck in your lungs and cause problems. I don't mean to scare you, but if you think you will be working with hazardous materials again in the future, you should take a course to get certified or liscenced ... for your safety and for your clients :)

. I believe the only thing someone can do to you is not pay you, and there's nothing you can do about it. If you screw something up, I think it's pretty much SOL for the customer
