Why didn't the controllers notice that jets were being flown towards the WTC? Wouldn't it be obvious that something's wrong?

Because there were several war games taking place, one of which simulated a passenger jet flying into the World Trade Center.
They were conned into beleiving that it was just an exercise.

It was obvious. The controllers noticed it and tried to call to the planes. They didn't respond. The transponder wasn't squaking 7700, so nobody knew it was a highjacking until it was obviously too late. Just because the plane is going in the wrong direction doesn't mean it has bad intentions. They realized what was going on too late to act. The Air Force got in the air too late to do anything. It was all a big mess and it was the first time anything like that had happened. Now we all know. We didn't before.

one of the reasons and probably the main one why the controllers did not notice that it was being flown towards the WTC is the fact that the hijackers of both planes turned off (or ordered the pilots) to turn off the transponder which transmits the aircrafts altitude speed and heading on the controllers radar screen

and by the way, to the person who said 7700 is the hijacking code, its the emergency code, 7500 is the hijacking code i believe, also known as a squawk code.

Have you ever seen air traffic radars, there are thousands of planes, and you just cannot go around shooting down planes just because it was going the wrong direction.

Before 9/11 it was a different world, nobody imagined that they would do what they did. Hindsight is always 20/20. If it was to happen again it would surely be different.

It was very obvious once they heard comments over the air. Bomb threats were heard by ATC as well as other traffic. Other calls by passengers were made and ATC was alerted. They followed aircraft closely and made frequent status checks. Once they saw who was hijacked, it was too late. With over 5,000 flights over the U.S. during the day, it's hard to keep track. They did a great job i thought. Even if they did notice it earlier, the most they could have done was get fighters out there, which still takes time.

I hope this answers your question.

Bruce, if you are going to believe everything you see on the internet, I suggest you Google Video search Penn & Teller's ******** show, specifically the one on 9/11. Maybe that will enlighten you. Personally, I was airborne on 9/11 in one of the few USAF aircraft that were in the air on routine training missons. If you really think the US gov't could organize such a thing and keep it quiet, you have never worked with or for the gov't.
