The dog is protecting it's territory and his pack(You & your family). It's nothing that you will be able to stop because it's his natural pack instinct to do this. Some training needs to be done however. But if he is barking excessivly once he starts than there is one meathod to get him to calm down. When he alerts to someone at the door and begins his bark promptly go to the door and and without yelling or getting frustrated call him to you in a firm but calm voice. Once he has come to you give him "SIT" GOOD BOY" and give lite praise by stroking his head a couple of times. Give "Stay" And then go to the door. But make him stay where he is. If he starts to come towards the door give the "Sit and Stay" again. What this does is tells your dog that it;s ok to alert when someone comes but shows him a stoping point. Kinda like telling him "Good job" but now you will take over and he can relax. Get a neighbor to help you with this exercize by comming to the door around every 30 min or so for a few times to help your dog get used to this activity.

Exercise the dogs more, dogs that bark excessively are bored and they can also use some training. Bark collars can help but you have to use them correctly. Dogs become collar wise so you will need to buy the collar and put the battery in upside down(this is so the weight will be the same) for two weeks, after two weeks put the battery in the right way and when the dog begins to bark the collar will give a little shock (it is not painful just startling) and at the same time you need to tell your dog quiet this way the dog associates the correction as coming from you and in time you will be able to just say quiet and the dog will listen. This takes time and patience but it does work my female shepherd barked at everything but after a few weeks of using this method she is a lot quieter.

An old training trick, from an old dog trainer.
Get an empty soda can and wash it out.
Put a few marbles in the can.
Tape the top up with masking tape.
Everytime your dog barks inappropriately, standing near the dog, shake the can two or three times.
The dog wont like being startled by the sound of the can, and eventually will cease the aggressive barking.
This also works for things like rooting through the garbage can, and jumping up on people.
Good Luck

It has been said that dogs and other animals will do anything to gett attention or to stop boredom. Does your dog have toys and play time with his friends?? Once you wear him out playing a few times and find something he really likes to chew on, like peanut butter in a rubber tube, I think the barking will slow down to a peaceful, acceptable amount. It works, he barks, people come to the door. Try something different. Good Luck Anne

We have our dogs in a fenced in area with a large dog house.
What we did was buy a BB Gun and shoot at the dog house,
it will make this ping sound and scare the dogs to be quiet.
Only took a couple trys to get them to understand that we didn't
want them barking like crazy. So now all we have to do is step
out the back door with the BB Gun and they go running for the
dog house.
Just be careful not to hit one of them because oh my that would
hurt them. Good Luck to ya.

Use the leash and collar method of training. Have someone come to your door and knock. When your dog reacts give a stearn jerk on the leash along with a voice command. Over time your dog will listen.

If you don't have the time to teach them the word quiet you can pick them up a bark collar it lets off a citronella scent and the dog will be quiet after a little while with the collar the habit will be gone. **** luck!

ok try this you got to train him to bark, to get him to not bark, sounds odd, your right !! but it works takes about 5 days, and works wonders.
start with a treat, or when you feeding him,ask him to bark ,reward with a treat, when you heard al lyou want to ,tell him to OUT he will quit ,on command ,as for people comeing to your door that fine, for a bit ,but if he carrys on try spraying water in his face, just clean water he will OUT on command
