Because round covers don't fall in. They are the same distance across, any way you turn them. They always stay on top.

If it was square, it could fall in if placed at an angle or carelessly dropped by a worker.

The most logical answer i can give you is for differentiate purposes. You may see different underground Services having manhole, pit, chamber and whatsoever. If you ever spot a round cover, everybody's first impression is a Sewerage Manhole Cover which indeed 80% they are always right.

Nowadays, because they are too many underground service, often the case the covers are engraved to shown logically what services it does.

And Why is it has to be round? Because the history of standard being draught out as it is

I have seen square ones (pre-1945) and occasionly the hole itself may be rectangular or square covered with a round one. This makes it possible for the cover to be dropped into the hole but round ones on round holes of course can not be dropped down. I like the rolling them idea, some a very very heavy indeed. I think the logistics of removing them and putting them back in are favoured towards them being designed round in my opinion. No corners to get stuck whilst stuggeling to get them in or out.

Its quick and easy to replace. If you have ever watched
they slide them back over the hole with their feet , then add
one bolt to the side and they are done. If it were square, they
would have to fit it just right back in place.
