the reason for it is because dogs/wolves are pack animals. They have the innate need for companionship. Even if it is only with one other person or one other dog/wolf, they will want a companion. When a dog is befriended by a person, they see that person as their new companion sometimes for now, sometimes for life. They like the comfort of knowing who they are, where they belong, and who their friends are.

I think other animals naturally befriend people too. examples like, dolphins, parrots(birds) and cats. I think It depends on the person that loves them as well. Befriend goes both ways - people and animal. And dogs and cats are easily adopted/accessible that most of other animals. Have you seen people bring dolphins for a walk? I am not 100% sure of my answer, but i hope im correct.

It's called domestication. A number of animals have been domesticated in the last 10,000 years, but none has developed the bonds to compare with dogs (horses and cats come the closest). Since wolves developed the preliminary bonds with humans, artificial selection (do not call it gibberish or you call the field of animal husbandry gibberish) has favored animals that react favorably to humans. I suppose you could call it natural, but it is the product of thousands of generations of planning.

Dogs have evolved alogside man so their natural instinct is to approach them as they would another dog. Just watch two dogs meeting; they are sussing each other out and that's what they are doing with a human. Don't get your comment about evolutionary gibberish or did you want me to say that's the way god made them?

Well.... evolution - the domestication of ancient canids. They learnt what worked for them to procreate - hang around humans. Then humans figured out how to live with them. Also our 'mammalian brain' has a strong emotional connection to their behaviors.

Check Patricia McConnell she just published a book on emtions

I'm sure that there are other species that also 'befriend' humans - look at different cultures.

Dogs go through a bonding period at 6-10 weeks old. We as humans put ourselves into that bonding period so that they are as attached to humans as they are to other dogs. Also dogs have been bred for their "docile" nature. By that I mean that their wildness has been bred out. The instinct to run from humans is reduced to the point that with socialization during the bond period, dogs become friendly with humans.

Let's compare them to cats. Cats have their bonding period from 3-6 weeks when they are still with their mom. So cats tend to be more attached to cats than to humans.

Maybe dogs aren't as adept at hunting for food as other animals, so they've come to rely on us to feed them?

Excellent question by the way. I look forward to seeing what other answers you get.
