Help! I have had my '05 Taurus in the shop many times because my "Check Charging System" message keeps popping up -- they have replaced TWO alternaters and I am still getting the message. According to them the tester shows that it is kicking out plenty of voltage and the light does not stay on constantly. It will go on and stay on sometimes for a brief second, sometimes for several minutes. Is there anything else I could ask them to check or did I buy a lemon?? Thanks

Ford's diagnostic system will state that on it message thing in the speedo cluster when the engine is off. Of course it should go off when the motor is running. If you have not had any trouble starting the car and your headlights are bright, I am betting there is nothing wrong with your charging system. It may just be that your diagnostic thing in the computer is slow to turn off the warning after you start your engine. I have the same system in my Fusion and it gives me that warning when the engine is off. It only does it when you have the info system set a certain way. Like when the trip odometer is turned off. At first I thought it was a problem but is it just like the old fashion red idiot light.

Could be a bad wire harness to alternator. Or a bad ground. My guess though is a bad wire harness, or connector. Many times the plastic wire connector will look ok but will be broken. When you hit a bump it will have a momentary bad connection causing the charge light to come on.

You could take the car to an Auto electric shop. One that works on electrical systems only. But I would just replace the connector if it were me. (Usually means the harness.) Get one from a bone yard, or from Ford.

Good luck!

Does it make a difference is you rev up the engine? Do they use a new or rebuilt alternator? Ask them to check the voltage regulator or if the regulator's in the alternator, replace it again.

Are you still under warranty? Could it possibly be something as simple as a fuse ? Or, did you buy it used ? Is it possible this car could have drowned ? It could be bad wiring. It could start shorting out other things if it's the wiring.
