A large pet supply store, or the pet supply department at a large discount store, will have specially made toothbrushes for dogs. These are much easier to use in a dog's mouth than a human one. They also have better grips. Be sure you also get specific DOG toothpaste. The stuff for humans isn't totally safe for dogs, from what I've heard. On the package of the toothpaste or the brush will be instructions. I can't imagine a sheltie would need toothbrushing any more or less than any other dog.

You may not need to actually brush their teeth. At the pet store, there is often dog treats that actually help clean and strengthen their teeth. Something like this may be what you need:

Petrodex Dental Chews for Large Dogs
5 oz. - Large
SKU: 843423
Dental disease strikes 85% of adult pets and is associated with bad breath, chronic mouth pain, and tooth loss. Even worse, this infection can spread dangerous bacteria to other organs, including lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys. Fortunately, you can help improve your pet's oral health through an ongoing program of home dental care.
Petrodex Dental Chews for Dogs are a great way to keep your dog's teeth clean and breath fresh and make dental care a treat. The patented Dual-Enzyme Formula attacks the bacteria that cause plaque and your dog's natural chewing action helps loosen tartar. Plus, Petrodex Dental Chews are so effective they're veterinarian approved.

I make a "bridel" out of a leather chew (about the diameter of a pencil and about 6-8 inches long) with rubber bands to hold it in my dogs mouth behind his back teeth. The rubber bands go to the back of his head. This holds his mouth open, It doesn't hurt him. ( He doesn't like it, but he doesn't like his teeth brushed either) I use the chiken flavored tooth paste with an electric toothbrush that the front part spins. I do this once a week. For some reason he gets bad breath quick.

I brush my dog's teeth every night after her dinner using a finger toothbrush (for babies) and toothpaste (for dogs). I start from the sides and then move to the front, so that she cannot lick off the toothpaste. My dog loves the taste of the toothpaste, so she kinda enjoys her teeth being brushed.

You can brush your dogs teeth but don't use human toothpaste. A good thing to do is give your dog stuff to chew. There are products out there that is good for your dogs teeth. Go to your pet store.

Do check your dogs teeth regularly. This effect their health greatly when they get old.

Hope this will help!

I have a cat, and believe me, brushing a pet's teeth requires 2 people. You need one to hold the animal and one to brush it's teeth. I'd suggest once a week.
You can find chicken flavored dog toothpaste at places like Petsmart, along with rubber toothbrushes for pets.

1. Accustom your dog to having his teeth cleaned early in life. Make the session a game and reward your dog with a tartar-control treat.

2. Two types of teeth-cleaning products exist that fit over the pet owner's fingertips. One is a rubber device a little larger than a thimble with tiny rubber spikes on it. The other has an actual brush on it so that you can brush your dog's teeth, using only tooth- paste that is intended for dogs. The brush can be sterilized in a microwave oven after each use.

3. If you prefer to use an actual brush, use a soft toothbrush meant for a baby.

4. If your dog has a very small mouth, use a human eyebrow brush.

5. Try a little baking soda instead of pet toothpaste to clean your dog's teeth. Caution: Human toothpaste is intended to be spit out and will make your dog sick if he swallows it.

6. An alternative way to clean your dog's teeth is to rub them several times a week with a dampened terrycloth washcloth. To make it more enjoyable for your dog, rub a little garlic on the cloth.

7. If your dog runs in the other direction when he sees you whip out the toothbrush and paste, offer him treats or food products that are designed to remove plaque and prevent the buildup of tartar. Give him some hard, dry, crunchy food as a part of his normal diet to help clean plaque deposits. Manufacturers have developed foods and treats to reduce the amount of tartar and plaque. Most are available in grocery stores and supermarkets.

8. Discuss with your veterinarian having your dog's teeth cleaned professionally. Teeth cleaning requires that your dog be anesthetized.

9. If your dog has bad breath, it could signal the sign of disease. Have your dog checked by a veterinarian. To help reduce bad doggie breath, purchase products intended to make your dog's breath smell better. They are available at pet stores.

10. As an alternative way to improve your dog's breath, mix three parts water to one part non mint liquid chlorophyl (available in health food stores) in a medicine bottle. Liquid chlorophyl is a natural deodorant. Give your dog one dropper full daily to fight bad breath from the inside

You can brush his teeth every day if you want to, the more you do it the better his teeth will be. Use a soft toothbrush and doggie toothpaste so it tastes good to him. It also helps if you give him a rawhide to chew on, gets rid of the plaque.

I have a 14 week old Bichonpoo. I use a toothbrush that is like a rubber tip that fits on my index finger. I put a little doggie toothpaste on it and just use the tip of my finger to clean her teeth.
