The fasion to wear white dress was started by one of the European queens. Before that, people wore traditional dresses, or just something nice, at least in my country. Traditional dress was not necessarily white. Red was more common, actually.
I don't know about signs of purity and such. I think that was assigned later. It was just a fasion that happened to stick.
Virginity has nothing to do with it. All that was assigned and attached later. In the old days, the girl getting married was assumed to be a virgin and color of the dress had absolutely nothing to do with it. Well, there were other barbarian ways of lettign everyone know that she in fact was a virgin.

It's not that it is formal. I do weddings all the time. If you wear white then you were a virgin. That is the whole thing about white dresses. So there really isn't a rule about the white dress. Formal dress is to be worn after a certain time. Just like candles are used at a certain time during a wedding.

Well white represents purity and yes it's suppossed to be a symbol of virginity. I guess at one time most new brides were virgins. Princess Di was. Now days I think it is fine for the bride to wear white if it's her first marriage even if shes not a virgin. Some women still wear white on their 5th marriage so I guess it really doesn't matter much anymore.

It used to be, anything you want to wear, wear. Then a queen got married and wore white, then it was the IN thing to do. It has since been said that it is to denote the virtue of the person wearing it. Personaly I say wear what makes you feel good. I have done several weddings where whilte was not the prefered color for the dress.

The time that a wedding takes place determines if it's formal or informal. Usually a wedding in the eveniing is formal.
As for wearing white, in the olden days it was customary for a bride to wear white to symbolize purity and virginity. Nowadays, a bride will wear whatever color she wants.

My sister in law wore red to her wedding. I think it is ok to wear white even if your not a virgin, lot's of people do it. White's a nice color (if we are considering white a color).

White does represent the bride's virginity. However, these days nobody really cares if the bride is a virgin or not. But that's why sometimes people (on TV or in real life) make snarky comments about brides with reputations, like "Who is she kidding, wearing that dress?".

yes, white represents pureness or "virgin". You would be a fraud if you wore white and were not a virgin. That's why a lot of people wear off white. But honestly, no one cares, a lot of people still wear white because it's "traditional"

Yes, it is a sign of purity before marriage. Since it is just symbolism, even if you are not a virgin (I wouldn't be surprised at the percentage of girls who aren't when they get married), most people still want to wear white; it's very traditional.
