i bypass for a harmonious interpretation. Revelation and a number of Jesus' parables were reported to be symbolic. of course then the question is to ascertain what the symbolism means. that is often concerning understanding some thing of the account. The Bible has interior it defined right here and there the symbols used in a unmarried position. different places, there are issues about symbols modern-day in Revelation which will be expounded upon e.g. in Isaiah. for this reason a deep understanding continual study with note-taking at cases assists in helping interpret puzzling passages. it is continually really sparkling even as a passage is to be taken actually.

The 144,000 are the Jewish virgin males that will be chosen and sealed by God to preach the kingdom gospel (during the great tribulation) which will basically sound like "Repent for the Day if the Lord is at hand". Probably the day called the Great and terrible day of the Lord. Great for those who accept Christ and terrible for those who don't. These men will eventually be martyred.

The number 144,000 is not merely symbolic.

This is indicated by the fact that, after mentioning the number 144,000, Revelation 7:9 refers to “a great crowd, which no man was able to number.” If the number 144,000 were not literal it would lack meaning as a contrast to the “great crowd.”
Viewing the number as literal agrees with Jesus’ statement at Matthew 22:14 regarding the Kingdom of the heavens: “There are many invited, but few chosen.

The description of them as “standing before the throne and before the Lamb” indicates, not necessarily a location, but an approved condition.

The 144,000 are those chosen to rule in heaven with the King Jesus Christ over the earth, the "great crowd"

The best way to answer this is to see what the Word of God, (Bible) has to say about this number or group. In Revelations 7:1-8 it tells of where the 144,000 will come from and Revelations 14:5 gives more of a description of this group. I like what it says in Revelations 7:9-17! Without asking my Pastor, that's the best answer I can give. Glad to see your hunger on seeking Him (the Lord Jesus). :-) p.s. there is a Pastor I saw once on TV that usually deals with this, here is his site... http://www.hollywoodcalifornia.com/JackVanImpeMinistries.htm

These are the only ones going to Heaven. The rest of us will live on a paradise earth (Psalms 37:11).

Many readers of the Bible, however, are aware of Jesus' words: "In the house of my Father there are many abodes. . . . I am going my way to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2, 3).

These teachings are not contradictory. In fact, one supports the other. To begin with, the Bible states that only a limited number of faithful Christians—namely, 144,000 of them—are raised as spirit creatures to live in heaven. Why are they given this wonderful reward? Because they make up the group that John saw in a vision who "came to life and ruled as kings with the Christ for a thousand years." (Revelation 14:1, 3; 20:4-6) Compared with the billions on earth, the 144,000 truly are a "little flock." (Luke 12:32) Moreover, having experienced the problems common to humankind, like Jesus they will be able to "sympathize with our weaknesses" as they supervise the rehabilitation of mankind and of the earth.—Hebrews 4:15.

The 144,000 will be high priests ordained after the Order of the Son of God and will preach His gospel throughout the world at the advent of Christ's Second Coming.

They are mentioned in both Revelation 7 and Revelation 14. In one of the two passages it says they are the first-fruit of those who are redeemed. That means they were the first Christian believers. It is interesting that the thousands of first Christian believers were Jews who turned to Christ. The passage is Revelation also refers to an uncountable number of people from the nations. Well, millins of people from the nations, or gentiles (non-Jewish), have turned to Christ since then. They are all in Christ on an equal basis.
Is the number 144,000 meant to be taken literally? I doubt it, personally.

There are 144,000 people who are bought from the earth to rule as kings and priests with Christ. They originally would have been from the 12 tribes of Israel but because the physical Israelites rejected God's son, they are now taken from Spiritual Israel because they have accepted God's son and are a nation producing righteous fruitage.

The 144,000 refered to in Revelation are faithful men and women who have been annointed with holy spirit and chosen to rule in heaven with Christ as kings and priest. The ingathering of this "little flock" began in 33CE,Pentecost in the upper room where 120 faithful disciples were annointed. These ones must prove faithful to death.Whereby then, they no longer will be mere fhesh and blood humans but become spiritual sons of God.
The fact that the 144,000 are "virigns" does not necessarily mean that the members of this class are unmarried in the flesh.Paul wrote to Christians who had a heavenly calling that whereas there are advantages to Christian singleness, marriage is preferrable under certain circumstances.
(1Cor.7:1,2;36,37).
What characterizes this class is a spiritual virginity. They have avoided spiritual adultery with worldly politics, and with false religion.(James4:4;Rev.17:5).
The 12 tribes mentioned in Rev.Chpt.7 must refer to this spiritual Israel (144,000)as well for several valid reasons. The listing does not match that of natural Israel at Numbers Chapter 1.Also Jerusalems temple and priesthood and all the tribal records of natural Israel were permanently destroyed, lost forever, long before John had his vision in 96CE.But more important John received his vision upon a background of the aforementioned developments from and after Pentecost 33CE.In the ligth of such events,John's vision of those standing on the Heavenly Mount Zion with the Lamb(whom natural Israel had rejected)revealed the number of this spiritual Israel of God to be 144,000,'bought from among mankind'(Rev.7:4;14:1,4)
The problem lies in with religions who teach that everyone goes to Heaven. That is not a Bible teaching. The Bible clearly shows that there are two classes.
Those with the heavenly hope also refered to as "little flock"(Lu.12:32).These ones number 144,000.And those who hope to live on the earth. These ones are referred to as "great crowd" and "other sheep"(Rev.7:9;John 10:16)These ones are not numbered.
