Mother cats so sometimes leave the litter so they can find food, but they don't leave for very long. I would assume the other cat was a male, and yes, a tom cat will kill the kittens if he can. Why? He wants them dead because then the mothers milk will dry up, thus causing her to go back into her heat cycle so he can breed her. Also, opposums occasionally eat kittens. I know they are normally not meat eaters, but kitten is a delicacy to them..ick
swear im not making any of this up!

I would think that the other cat might have hurt the kitten, not the mother....the mother could have been off catching food and tryed to protect her young. You should take care of the cat and see if the kitten is alright but if you do, be very careful =(
Good Luck and God Bless

It is possible that the mother left her kitten hidden. Though male cats do kill babies that arnt theirs. Because its more competition, and if there is a female thats bred with a different male. The one will kill the others offspring so the female will go back into heat faster. So he can breed her. Big cats like lions do the same thing.

Mother cats will leave their kittens to find food, and go back to their kittens. We had a stray mother cat come to our house and we fed her, she left and came back with a few kittens, then left again and bought the rest of her kittens. Five kittens in all. What a smart cat. Yes we took care of all the kittens and the mother cat too.

Some male cat's will kill kittens. Sadly this is all part of nature.. I found 2 very small kittens in Chicago years ago. The male kitten was trying to protect his sister who had been attacked by another cat. That's what the vet told me and we had to let her go. I took in the brother, but all he wanted to do was kill my older cat. I really think they do remember things that happen to them. Let's hope the Mother hid them and went hunting.

Sadly, tom cats (unentered males) have been known to kill kittens so that the mother's milk would dry up and she would go into heat again. This is another good reason for spaying and neutering animals.

Poor, poor kitty's!
This people is a perfect ****** example of people who are selfish and ignorant when they chose NOT to spay/neuter/vaccinate their pets! Just one cat not spayed can have kittens and they breed and they breed and so on. It is a vicious cycle with only a tragic ending. A few get picked up and taken in as pets. I have done that with 3. They are healthy and happy. What about the rest?
The lady asking this question is awesome for trying to save those 2 kitty's! I HOPE your kitten is ok :)
Bless you!

Yes they do.
Male cats have a territorial radius and mate with several females. If they can't seem to identify a kitten as theirs, they'll try to kill it.
Lions do the same thing; it's a feline thing.

if you touched the kitten then there is a chance the mother could have moved the kitten. they tend to move them or abandon them if they smell that humans have been touching thier babies.

Yes, males will do that. Lions and the big cats do the same thing.
