Why don't you get some chunky streaks and then if you want it lighter go back and get some more. That way you are not damaging your hair too much for no reason.
Bleached hair can feel very course and straw like and it is almost impossible to have a wash and wear style if you hair has been overbleached. You will get fluffy bits all over the place. You should talk to a qualified hairdresser so she can tell you exactly what is best for your hair.
Also remember that if you change your hair colour dramatically you will need to rethink all your makeup colours and tones.
And I agree with hairdvs above - you can really make a mess and you won't be able to fix it up with a box colour. See a hairdresser!

If you are going to bleach your hair, whether you do streaks or all over color, please don't do it at home. If your hair is medium brown you will most likely get orange, yellow or a a lovely mixture of the two. And it's much more difficult to fix something that has gone wrong, and it costs much more, than to get it done correctly the first time. Even though you can "Just dye it back brown" there's more to it than throwing a box color on it. When color is applied correctly and done well it is less damaging, lasts longer and can make you look great. If you're not sure what bad color can do for you, check out your local grocery store check out line after 11:00 p.m. You'll be able to tell which customers have done their own hair just by standing behind them in line. And, yes, I know many people have done it and will tell you they do it at home all the time and it looks fine but the ones who screw up don't usually brag about it. Good luck.

Bleaching your roots is a pain in the butt. However, it only takes about half the processing time of a full-head bleach.
One thing to remember is that your scalp is very sensitive and to avoid chemical burns you should never use anything stronger than a 30 volume peroxide (20 is usually a better idea) for the bleach. The strength of the bleach will be written on the peroxide bottle - 20, 30 or 40 volume.
When you bleach your roots you should expect to feel some tingling or slight itchiness on your scalp. If it starts to burn wash it out immediately!
Also, never bleach your hair if you have sores or cuts on your head. And when you wash it out make sure you use shampoo to ensure all the bleach is out of your hair.
Any chemical processes - bleaching, chemical straightening, perming, permanent colouring, will damage your hair.
Use conditioner every time you wash your hair to keep it soft.
Use a protein conditioner every 1 to 2 weeks (no more).

straeks are the best way to do it... and if you don't like your hair well just dye the streaks a little lighter than your natural hair color it will create low lights these will just add a little sheen to your color and you get to keep some difference. what's the point of damaging your hair with bleach if you're gonna remove it after...

Definitly be sure to get it done at a salon. Do it yourself bleaching can be disasterous. Or if you do decide to do it by your self I would try highlights and preferably the type w/the cap to be extra careful and neat with application.

streaks are the best... but it is not GOOD for ur hair at all..i used to streak my hair all the time... i would get a touch up every 2 weeks.. and it killed my hair.. just remember with dying hair or any kind of coloring there is always touch up... a lot of dry hair, which causes breakage and a lot of money.

no matter what, bleaching is going to be really bad for your hair, just don't repeatedly bleach it. If you don't like it, it is true, you can always dye it back, good luck!

allover bleaching looks too fakey and is too hard to maintain -- get lots of highlights in 3 or 4 different blonde colors
