Lets face it, there are millions of highly educated, intelligent Christians out there. So my question is, what exactly is taking place in otherwise logical, reasonable peoples heads to make them abandon rational thought, and participate in an outrageous delusion?
If I say Jesus was resurrected and floated up into heaven, a Christian agrees, but if I say a reindeer floats, I'm nuts.
If I say Jesus walked on water, that is reasonable, but if Chris Angel does it, it's a magic trick.
If you ask a Christian if prayers make a difference, they'll say, "certainly", but you don't see them speed through intersections, "praying" the lights will turn green.
If Christian gets sick, they'll take antibiotics that were created in a lab via science based on evolution, but if you show them the skull of an Australopithecus, they'll deny that's evidence of evolution.
Obviously they are capable of distinguishing reality from fantasy, WHEN THEY CHOOSE TO. What is this magical spell they're under?!?

I think the majority of people, regardless of their intelligence, need to believe in something. They need that "higher power" to quell their fear of death, to ease their grief when loved ones die, and to give them a sense of justice in the world. Let's face it, we all know examples of bad things happening to good people, or bad people "getting off scott free".
Believing in any religion gives people the comfort they need. Has anyone ever wronged you and gotten away with it? Wouldn't it be nice to smile to yourself and say, "they will pay for that, God will Judge them!"
That's why people believe. Its very satisfying.
As to why they believe one religion and not others? Well, you pick one and you run with it. If you start giving other fantasic ideas too much credit, you'll soon find yourself questioning your own beliefs, and there goes all the comfort you've worked so hard to aquire!

If I say Jesus was resurrected and floated up into heaven, a Christian agrees, but if I say a reindeer floats, I'm nuts.
and you would be right, Jesus is reality while Rudolf is fantasy.
If I say Jesus walked on water, that is reasonable, but if Chris Angel does it, it's a magic trick.
here again we have reality and fantasy.
If you ask a Christian if prayers make a difference, they'll say, "certainly", but you don't see them speed through intersections, "praying" the lights will turn green.
a christian also has common sense and knows that God does not work that way, just like like he didn't give you that million dollars you asked for when you bought your lottery ticket.
what if there were cars coming from all 4 directions if they all pray for a green light someone is going to die in that intersection. ask a smart question.
If Christian gets sick, they'll take antibiotics that were created in a lab via science based on evolution, but if you show them the skull of an Australopithecus, they'll deny that's evidence of evolution.
all science is not based on evolution which is a theory and there is no evidence for it.
i have have no problem distinguishing reality from fantasy. are you saying that you believe reindeer fly or that magic tricks are real and that you go speeding through intersections making foolish request.
what spell are you under?

Do you think that Highly Educated Christians don't know what "fantastic thinking" is? Do you think that they haven't thought through this sort of question.
Furthermore, you're not endearing yourself to Christians or warming the cockles of their hearts by callng that which they live their lives by "an outrageous delusion"
Heck, there are some UFO enthusiasts out there who believe more fantastic stuff than someone being raised from the dead, and I don't see them getting thsee kinds of questions.
Also, so what if we believe what we believe. Christianity practiced causes people to want to help the poor, the sick, the needy, to want to care for the environment etc. These things aren't hurting you and are probably helping you adn the rest of society. So why get your panties in a bunch?
And finally, do you really think your asking a question that hasn't been asked six million, seven hundred, and ninety thousand times already?

I think you have the wrong idea about true Christians. I am a Catholic Christian and to a point I agree with you. I think a healthy sense of fantasy is very important in developing a good Faith life. If you can not imagine things than how can you fathom a God like we have? Yes we need a good mind but, a Christian needs to examine everything for what it is and we cannot characterize anything and know its worth just by what department we find it in. St. Paul said " Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial" so we need to stick to what is beneficial.

one must be cautious about science fiction, least G-D command it become, all deluded science fact, much to your shagrin. but if you take a look at this world, as G-D sees this world. then you would notice, their is not a single person or organization, on this planet, who is not doing what is commanded by G-D in accordance to the way they actualy think of G-D. even the disbelievers are commanded in their disbelief, for what ever they think this is worth to them. but what goes around as always in TheTorah, always comes back around as always here in TheTorah. because this is what TheG-D of only TheTorah always gives unceasingly. do any of you realy know the extent of ThePower's of G-D?

You have to understand that to some - God does make sense. I believe God gave Man the science to create antibiotics. I believe in the possibility of God's hand in evolution as he over looks his creations. We are, by astronomical standards, his pampered, cosseted, cherished group of creatures.. .. . It is my view that these circumstances indicate the universe was created by God for man to live in.
