In the Spanish language, when do I know to use "su" or "sus"? If the sentence reads: "The family goes to a restaurant that serves Mexican food. Their favorite restaurant is The Espiga de Oro," then I would say, "La familia va a un restaurante que sirve la comida mexicana. (Su or Sus?) restaurante favorito es La Espiga de Oro."

I'll give you some examples... what's between () is just an explanation and not part of the sentence.

SUS

Sus (de ellas or ellos, of them (femenine/masculine)restaurantes favoritos son los mexicanos
Their favorite restaurants are the mexican ones.

Sus colores favoritos son rojo y azul.
Her or his favorite colorS are red and blue

SU

Su(de ella or él - of him or her) comida favorita es la mexicana.
Her or His favorite food is the mexican one.

In the case of familia, it's gender is feminine and it's singular even when many people is part of a family; that's why you use SU.

Su restaurante favorito es La espiga de oro.

I'm not that good to explain...
I hope u understood...

There is an antecedent (a word that goes before). In your example "La familia va" is singular. The family goes. . .now to say "their favorite restaurant is" refers back to "la familia", right? La familia is a singular item, and in Spanish, this antecedant, being singular (even though there are many people in the family) is followed by a singular "su" not the plural "sus". We use "Their" when really we should say "Its favorite rest. . . " But we don't in English. That is what translation is all about, using correct grammar, but staying with the usage of the speakers, even if it seems funny to us.

Dios te bendiga, mi amigo.

Su.
The restaurante is singular. You'd only say sus if it was "their favorite restaurantS are..."

"Familia" is also singular, but that doesn't matter here.

Also, you can say "La familia va a un restaurante que sirve comida mexicana." Not "la comida."
