Lots of good answers here. One of the things my clients tell me is that they appreciate the fact that I am always glad to see them. I am interested in them, focused on what's going on in my chair rather all over the salon, and I make sure I geive them great, not good service. Smile. Referrals are great because they come in with the idea that they already like you. Smile. Every person in your chair has the potential to send you a referral. A good referral incentive program but first and foremost, focus on the clients you already have. Smile. Hand them 2 or 3 business cards when they leave, and be sure to thank them for their business and the referral. I built my business by handing out business cards every where I went and promoting my referrals. Free gifts go a long way. Perhaps a shampoo or styling aid to the client who refers people to you. I never discount my services but even a thank you card goes a long way. There are many things you can do to build your business and I would recommend trying some of the suggestions you receive here but there is an art to client retention. Get your client retention up to the 80 or 90 percentile and you'll be busy. Good luck.

Word of mouth is the best way. But unfortunately if you do not crank out customers fast enough, all the pub in the world will not allow you to RETAIN your customers. There are definitely trade-offs between quality and speed. With 18 years of experience you should probably be adequately equipped to provide both. Caring for your customers is good; Respecting their time and getting them out the door looking good is better. Give your customers discounts when they bring in a referral. Get some good assistants so that they can help you get the customer in and out in a reasonable time frame. Do what you do, and if you are good, the customers will come. Be blessed!

Advertise! If you can't afford to advertise in the paper, make flyers and see if you can put them in places where women frequent-- doctors office, day care centers, the mall, etc. Put a coupon of some sort on the flyer. Talk to fiends and family and ask them to refer people to you, offer them something for the referral... five dollars off for every referral, etc.

I have to say that I pick my hairdresser based on what their hair looks like. I have seen some hairdressers that look like they should be in a Rocky Horror Picture SHow and others that look like they have just got out of bed and thrown their hair in a ponytail.

Of course I'm sure your hairstyle is fabulous.......

Marketing marketing marketing. Take pics, find a local magazine, and publish them. Put up fliers. Create a website. Encourage word of mouth by giving customer referral discounts.

Word of mouth. Treat your customers right and the next time someone compliments their hair, they will tell them about you. You can also try to advertise or have a day of door prizes. (Free bottle of shampoo for the tenth customer of the day.)

Ok...if you have a local coupon mailer, like the PENNYSAVER, get a small add in there with a few specials. and PLEASE by all means, don't have your clients in there for hours on end. That alone is why I do not go to the salon now. The last time I went, I was there for SIX hours!!!!!!!!!!!

A couple of dollar discount to your regular clientele if they bring/refer new customers. Give them their tip back every once in a while as a thank you.
