Well, you need to get a tourist visa (L type) to travel to China. To get that you need to prepare yourself as below:

For US citizens, you need to have a passport: Valid 6 or more months with clear visa page.
1 Peoples Republic of China Visa Application
1 Color Photograph 2" x 2" with white or light background
1 Detailed business letter or invitation from company in China (business purposes only)

You can obtain a single, double or 6 month multiple entry visa. To obtain a one year multiple entry visa you must have a prior China visa in your current passport to be considered for one.

The China Embassy or Consulates will no longer accept visa applications by regular or express mail or any other delivery services (FedEx, DHL, UPS,). Applications must be submitted in person, by an agent of the traveler or a visa service authorized to do business at the China Embassy and Consulates. You can get more info from this link: http://www.jiasdreamtours.com/tt_visa_em...

For single entry, $50; double entry is $75, multiple entry for 6 months is: $100.

The regular processing time is 4 working days. For express service, additional fees of $30 for 1 working day processing, and $20 for 2-3 working days processing will be charged.

Regarding the transportation: the major airlines that fly to China are: Air China, United Air, Northwest, Cathay pacific( if you go to HK). For more detail, you can check this link: http://www.jiasdreamtours.com/tt_air_travel.html

Have a great trip to China!

To get to mainland China you will require a Visa. This could take 3 - 4 days to process. Depending on where you are currently depends on the fastest means of transport.
I would suggest plane and that should be the fasted means of transport but it will also be the safest. Keep in mind when travelling to China to keep things close to you as there are allot of thief's in China and allot of people out there who just want to make a buck so be careful who you speak to and who you trust.

First, contact the Chinese consulate in charge of area of residence in order to obtain a L tourist visa (I assume you are going for tourism). You can also obtain a visa through service agencies such as travel agencies, for a fee. See the website below for more information.

Obviously the fastest and most economical way to get there from the USA is by plane...

There'll be instructions on the embassy Website. You can check it and make a call.

Would you please tell me the location you are ? or the city you're planning to leave? And what kind of sight-seeing would you like to put in your schedule?Famous archetecture, culture, nature scene or business trip in big city? The route and fleight depend on your propurse.
