I wouldn't recommend it. The housing at Schoefield Barracks is pretty bad, even by Army standards. Plus, everything is incredibly more expensive in Hawaii and military income doesn't change by location, so your money has to stretch further. Plus, Hawaii is fun for a couple months and then just gets boring. Nice place for a vacation but I wouldn't live there.

Island fever is a big concern. Oahu is a pretty small island, you can traverse the entire perimeter in about 2 hours. it's VERY touristy, and that can be a major turnoff. BAH and Cola do help with the expenses, although Housing is at a premium both on and off base.
as for jobs on the economy.. tourist industry. Hotels, restaraunts, retail are the big ones. You also have the Museums atPearl Harbor and the Mighty Mo.
Schools tend to be pretty bad across the board, unless you spring for private school.
We tried getting orders there, but we are Navy, and have no kids, so it would have been less of an issue for us.

Boy everyone is hitting in on the nose. My husband is in the navy and is stationed there. I'm in the Coast guard getting stationed there only because my husband is there. If my husband was there I would of picked somewere else in a heart beat. I suggest tring to get a job on one of the bases. Just because you are not from hawaii. They islanders treat you different. You have to watch were you go. There are fast food, stores, malls, any were like that can give you a job. I suggest if you can go somewere else go somewere else. We have at least a year there. Then hopefully just after that we can leave. It a small place, trafic stinks. And if you have kids the school systems aren't that good. Send them to on base school. It is very expensive there. A gallon of milk is 4.00$.

I agree with the others who have answered. It is very expensive. It's beautiful but small. It's great at first but after a while all you see is water and palm trees. The housing there is really old but there are several bases there to work on and do you shopping. I would recommend getting a job on base. The Child Development Center pays really well. The hawaiians don't really want us there and if you are white they really don't want us there. I guess really it's what you make of it. I personally couldn't wait to leave. If you like the beach you will probably love it there.

Well the housing is not that great but it is a place to sleep and eat. Well I didn't work when we was there so I took the kids and played and sight seeing. We learned about everything since I was always learning the kids stuff before they started to school. When that time came I was ready to be on the main land. Good Luck

I was stationed in Barbers Point ,Oahu> I have to agree it was great for about 6 months after that it got real expensive and small. Worst of all being Caucasian we are the minority and they make sure we know it . I wouldn't even vacation there its extremely expensive and way overrated. Go to Miami its easier, same climate and allot more to do.
