They come in later when you're older and with age comes wisdom. In some people it does anyway.
I had all four pulled at the same time but I felt very little pain. It was a little sore for a couple days but healed quite fast.

They are called wisdom teeth because they grow out when most people are older. The majority of the pain is because they have to dig out the roots when they remove them, the roots can be deep and wrapped around other roots.

"wisdom" teeth is a term coined long agon when our lifespans were much shorter. It's a coming of age, being the wise one in the clan thing.
They hurt because teeth are attached to the bone in you jaws. They literally have to cut them out from the bone to get them out. If they haven't broken through yet, it takes more work to get them out and it hurts more. Or if they are impacted and pushing against your other teeth.

1. Because they come in later when a person is closer or into adulthood, they are also called "21-year molars" because some people don't get them until that age.
2. Because they are large-ish and have deep roots that have to be extracted from your jaw. Then you may have to have your gums stitched back closed. Naturally, that is a painful process.
