My german mittel spitz is a very picky eater. I try very hard to discipline him when it comes to eating his dog food (although he tolerates his vitamins and healthy biscuits). Sometimes he will go on a hunger strike for DAYS -& course I eventually give in to that by giving him human food which is all he will eat these days. I was feeding him Eukaneba.. and after doing my research with dog food.. I realized that it may not be the best brand! I've been hearing some negative reviews with the brand and other brands such as Purina..Science Diet.. etc.. basically the ingredients are crap. As of now, I believe I am feeding him as healthy as I can. I feed him organic chicken with brown rice and broth, veggies/fruits, and I make sure he has suppliments and vitamins everyday. Vet says hes in great shape. I know that even If I feed him well as of now, I might be missing nutrients. I need to find a exceptional brand! Ive been looking at Red Barn, Canidae,& Wellness, any news of this? Suggestions?

Eukanuba is not the best food out there but it is no where near the worst. The biggest issues with supermarket foods is the use of byproducts and chemicals. The chemicals, i understand but the byproducts arent too bad considering that around th world, people eat any and every part of an animal. Again, its not the best but its not the worst. There are better quality foods out there. As you mentioned, Canidae, Wellness, Red Barn, Natural Balance, Royal Canine, TimberWolf, etc. The best two of the mentioned are Canidae and Timber just because of the amount of protein used in such a small amount of food. Natural Balance and Royal Canin are both VERY good brands as well. I feed my 3 GSDs and 1 Schnauzer Natural Balance dry and wet food and the LOVE IT. I know dogs gobble up food but when i switched them to this brand, they ate with enthusiasm. What you could try for a day or two is mixing in wet food with dry food. This will open up the dogs palette. Depending what kind of wet food you buy, it can cost as little as 50 cents up to 2 dollars a can. If you are cooking for your dog, biggest thing to remember, DONT skimp on the protein and give more vegetables. A lot of owners do this and don't realise or notice their dogs become a slight bit sluggish. Dogs need protein (beef,lamb,chicken,duck,fish,etc.). If you want to switch to kibble, go for Canidae, Royal Canin, Natural Balance, or Wellness.

I feed my dog Wellness and he does well on it, but, all dogs are different you may want to check out the Canidae, Innova, California Natural, Solid Gold and also Merrick has a good product too. Good Luck it's not easy.

canidae, wellness and solid gold are excellent choices however if you continue giving table food your dog will not want to eat dog food no matter what brand you buy.
