Just man up and take it. I got certified and it really wasn't that bad, it hurt for a little while but I just shook it off, oh yeah it started burning again when I took a shower.

Dunno what kind of decontam system your course will use, but I've done well with successive rinses in 3-4 deep pans of cool fresh water and liberal use of baby shampoo. The baby shampoo will not irritate your already considerably irritated eyes, and will help wash off the non-water soluble oleo-capsicum spray ... a oil/fat mix of pepper extract and a PAM-like spray base. The baby shampoo will get it off skin.
Some will stay in your hair, so when you shower later, I suggest you bend forward at the waist so any residual spray will not rinse down to the tender nether regions (trust me... voice of experience here)
Tip for the "moment of truth" when the cloud hits you... don't inhale. The stuff REALLY irritates nasal passages and lungs. Good thing for perps, bad thing otherwise.

Good Luck

Prepare to drool uncontrollably.

Be sure NOT to Rub your eyes- it will spread it and they will burn like holy hell. Instead splash cold water into them

Pepper spray is an inflammatory agent, not an irritant like Mace. It causes immediate closing of the eyes and coughing. The length of the effects depend on the strength of the spray but the average full effect lasts around thirty to forty-five minutes, with mitigated effects lasting for hours.

Though there is no way of completely neutralizing pepper spray, its effect can be minimized or stopped. As veteran chili eaters know, capsicum is not soluble in water, and even large volumes of water will have little to no effect. It is, however, soluble in fats and oils, and detergents can be used to wash it off.

Victims of Pepper Spray should be encouraged to blink vigorously in order to encourage tears, which will help flush the irritant from the eyes. Some of the oil can be washed off the face using a degreasing, non-oily soap such as a mild dish detergent, and a fan will provide some relief.

Some "triple-action" pepper sprays also contain "tear gas" (CS gas), which can be neutralized with sodium metabisulfite (Campden tablets, used in homebrewing), though it, too, is fat-soluble and could be washed off to a degree with milk, and some contain a UV "blanketing" dye (little can be done against this, but its effects are not nearly as dramatic).

Good Luck to you!

they're for the main area the appropriate same element (Oleoresin Capsicum suspended in fluid and propellant), with the exception that bear Sprays oftentimes have plenty extra suitable cans, and longer stages than those meant for human attackers. The concentration of the lively factor varies, yet a ordinary mistake is to seem at basically the % of OC in it. it somewhat is needed observe the concentration or "warmth" as properly, that's measured in Scovilles. the U. Don't touch your eyes when it's burning. You will feel like you have lost total control of your eyes. But do NOT touch them. Water doesn't help either. What I did to help the pain was doing some push ups.

I remember a few colleagues of mine had a second reaction a few weeks later. They were laughing at a joke and they started to cry... well their tears reactivated the pepper spray. So just FYI....

All have good tips above me, but no one mentioned not shaving the day of the certification. Shave the night before. Also in addition to rinsing in cool water, I liked having a good breeze of cool air on my face after. So if there is a fan or air conditioner near by stay close to it.

As the other poster stated, Make sure to lean out while taking your shower that night.

I think we all have been victims...my question is why do we do this? Do we get sprayed and then fight or run? Normally, you just get sprayed and suffer. Our agency used to have a rule that if you want to carry it, you have to get sprayed by it. Well, I carry a gun. Does that mean we have to get shot, too!!??

In answer to your question, though. Take it as long as possible without any aids. When the stuff happens on the street, you'll be lucky to have help. After you are sprayed, do some pushups or situps. Kick some butt...and don't mind the others who are gagging and spitting and coughing and crying...babies, babies, babies...

Put a bucket of fresh water out - and when you put your face in it, as much as it hurts, open your eyes under water. Trust me on this! It will quicken the subsiding of pain. Also, periodically scoop out the top bit of water to get rid of what has come off and is floating in the bucket.

Also be forwarned that when you shower next, some of the sting will come back

Oh yeah!!!!
I went through this in the academy, it sucks big time!
-Close your eyes, close your mouth and hold your breath
-No matter how tempting it is to rub your eyes or skin....don't
-Have baby shampoo on hand
-Instead of using pans of water, which keep the residue on the surface, using running water to rinse your face
-When you shower later, wash your hair first, several times, over the bath, then shower the rest of you (don't let it run from your hair down your body, it burns in bad places)
Good luck
