Even though I have seen some devices to convert VGA to HDMI, the manual for my Toshiba HDTV monitor (51HC85) warns to never connect this monitor to a PC.

There is no explaination why. Does anyone know? Thanks!

You have what is called a rear-projection CRT monitor. The reason that you have a warning not to connect a PC is because there is a risk of screen "burn-in". This happens when an idle image is left on the screen for an extended period of time. Video games and computers tend to have brighter pictures with sharper contrast and increase the risk of a burn-in. If you purchase an LCD, plasma or DLP television, you won't have a problem with burn-in because they use a different type of technology. You still have an awesome television. Don't ruin it by connecting your PC or playing video games for too long.

I don't think it means to say never connect, rather not recommended to connect from a PC. In effect, what you get when connecting from a PC to a HDTV is that the display from the PC is stretched horizontally; for example a PC will typically push out a 1024 x 768 resolution and stretch that to a 16:9 aspect ratio. Object's will appear fatter then usual. There are two ways to rectify this:

1) settings on your graphics card to adjust to the 16:9 display. not all graphics card support this.
2) if watching a movie from your PC using players like VLC, the player is able to adjust the PC output to optimize for a 16:9 display. The movie will appear compressed horizontally on the PC but just find on the HDTV.

A point to note: connecting VGA to HDMI does not make use of the audio signals in the HDMI to the HDTV monitor.
