actually it was very early in mans history when ugg was building a window to keep the draught out of his cave, but he made it too big so he fitted it as a door, he got fed up with rolling a rock against it to keep it shut whilst out hunting, there was a knothole in the door and Eureka he fitted a short stump from the branch of a tree, the first knob, he then found he could open and close the door much easier. a few thousand years later a latch device was invented, later still came the famous Chubb lock with 5 levers that are in use today. jb uk not all the lies i tell are untrue.

Probably because the idea of a "knob" is one of those very subjective variables that would be hard to track down. A knob could consist of any thing for instance: a protruding nail; or as the name suggests a knob from a tree limb. Any one who would be presumptuous enough to claim inventors rights to a mere knob is long gone in more ways than one. I don't believe in cave men, as such but I do believe even they could have fabricated a knob which even the Library of Congress would have little hope of disclosure.
