I am currently sick with a cold and I remember that my mother used to tell me that eating chocolate and drinking milk while sick with a cold can cause excess mucus in the the throat/chest area... is this true? or is this just another one o those silly wives tales?

She's right about the milk. It does thicken secretions and make it harder to get rid of them and the cold virus that's causing the problem. Chocolate, unless it's in combination with milk, has no effect one way or another. (Chicken soup with plenty of onion and pepper will actively help. That's one of those old wives' tales that's been medically substantiated.) Hope you feel better soon.

I cant imagine why. Chocolate is a natural anti oxitant. It also chemicals similar to Marijuna. Makes you have those good feelings. The darker the chocolate the healthier it is for you. I pulled this off the web. Have a look:)

Chocolate has been regarded
as a nutritional and medicinal aid since the Mayans and Aztecs consumed it more than 3,000 years ago. In modern times, chocolate has been used to treat anemia, and it may have a positive effect on appetite and kidney function. It is also a good source of magnesium, which is important for regulating blood pressure and building bones.

This one is easy. If you feel sick from eating it then stop. Just another old wives tale. Your not going to die from eating chocolate when you have a cold or doctors would have told us about it a long time ago. I don't stop eating chocolate because of a cold. But if it does not make me feel good i will. But it won't help get rid of your cold fast though. Lots of water and chicken soup. If you have a dry stuffed blocked cold, eat a small peice of garlic everyday.
Take care and enjoy your chocolate.

The body should break up the alcohol in the same way. Alcohol has nothing to do with the immune system (which is your defense mechanism against pathogens, viruses, etc.) Your liver breaks down the ethanol found in alcohol. The only thing is that a hangover will probably be worse because you already feel crappy. Drinking lots of water (while you ingest alcohol as well) is good for hangovers and for colds.

I was just reading something about chocolate and that it can actually be good for the throat or whatnot if you have a cold.

Yes, she is correct. (sorry!) When you're sick, you're under stress. To deal with this stress, your body releases hormones that help it fight disease. But these hormones have side effects. They raise blood sugar levels and interfere with the blood sugar-lowering effects of insulin.

As a result, when you are sick, it is harder to keep your blood sugar in your target range. Eating chocolate (unless it's a bar of unsweetened bakers chocolate) is going to effect your blood sugar levels.

Metabolically, sugar lowers your body's natural immune system response and impairs your body's natural ability to heal against infectious disease & common cold.

She may have been right but without knowing why. Get the whole story so you do not have to wonder about it for the rest of your life. See site below. You do not get a cold unless you need one.
