It sounds like the cable that runs from the shifter to the trans is begining to fray. If this is the case it makes it hard to shift.
Try this.
Look where the cable connects to the trans. Most of the time it is under the air box.
Disconnect it from the trans and then shift it . If the cable is still hard to move, replace the cable.

What model year is your Intrepid?
We've seen shift cables from time to time, but there is a recall C45 that applies to certain vehicles (LH body, JA and JX) with or without autostick from 1993-1999. Contact your dealer with your VIN and see if the recall applies to your car

I see soft drinks spilled into the gear shifter on floor shifts that can be taken apart and cleaned. Or the shifter indicator part replaced. And like the other answers your car might want professional help.
