I would like to buy a small family dog. The mini Daschund or Beagle, I feel, would be ideal for our family. I don't want to go to a pet store, I prefer a kennel. I live on Staten Island. Can anyone recommend kennels in the NJ and PA areas?

In all likelihood, there will be an adoption fee that covers the cost of the shots, food, and other medical attention that he got while in the shelters care. Remember that even if you get a dog for an inexpensive price you will still have to pay for food and vet care.

Why don't you try www.craigslist.com!
They have tons of pets and if you check regularly you can find the dog you like. Also, you can post an ad just like this here and you'll be amazed just how many people will contact you.
I recommended craigs list to another lady that wanted to sell her dog and it was a pleasant and succesful experience for her.

PS: There are some breaders on CL that over charge for small dogs, for a Daschsund you would pay anywhere from $200 to $400 and not more. There are many people that just want to find a good home for their dog just because they can't spend enough time them, so they even give them away for free if it's the right person. You just need to be patient.

I can't answer the question because I live in Georgia... but I do want to throw in a vote for the mini dachsund. We have a black and tan long haired... great personality, incredibly smart, gentle and hilarious!
