i used to walk around the creeks and collect seed heads off long grass, they love it.
They also love corn cobs, i give them the leftover bits after my dinner.
I used to make a mix for my finches when they were breeding out of - grated apple, grated carrot, grated cheese, boiled egg mashed up, bran, and any other bits and pieces that available.
don't give them lettuce as the high moisture content will cause diarrhea

I imagine you are referring to the thanksgiving bird. If so, try soaking it in a brine solution for twenty four hours prior to cooking. Brine is basically salt water.
