To actually pull the plug would be euthanasia.

"Pulling the plug" is a slang phrase for "withdrawal of life support". Remember that not every one in a coma is on life supporting machinary. Most of the time this pulling of the plug refers to the ventilator. This machine is used for patients that can not breathe well enough on their own and require assistance with respirations to get enough oxygen to the organs of the body to keep them from failing or dying and there by causing the individual to die. It is now a law the when one enters the hospital that they are asked about Advanced Directives which addresses living wills and DNR status. The term DNR ( Do Not Resusitate) refers only to the status of what your wishes/decision you want to be done in case you do attempt to die. Either by cardiac or pulmonary arrest or the combo cardiopulmonary arrest. There are actually different levels of DNR. Euthanasia refers to assisting one to die. Which by the way is an illegal act when preformed on humans but is widely used on animals.

Remove life support-lets not get it twisted, this is not euthanasia.
Life support devices are not natural. Anything that doesn't come from the earth is not natural. This is a personal choice.

I have a DNR order which my family has had a hard time dealing with. Some people think that this is a wish to die or suicide but it is not-what is the point of prolonging struggle and agony? In my opinion if it is intended for me to live then i will like the young lady said above-she proves that not everyone who has life support removed dies

I hope that your family is not going though this. My mom and her siblings along with my grandparents couldn't decide after my uncle had a brain aneurysm and while they were trying to decide what to do he went peacefully in his sleep.

God Bless You and your family-the soul and spirit of a person remains forever ingrained in your mind but the body leaves the planet first always :-)

Pulling the plug, my family had to make that decision with, me when I was 16. I was hit by a drunk driver spent 8 days in a coma, I was brain dead according to the doctors, But I came out, after they pulled the plug-turned off my life support.

Meaning they take a person off life support.. life support is the machinery that sustains life. Pushes air into the lungs..Once it is turned off.. the persons heart slows way down until it stops. This is a very hard decision to make. I know my mother and I had to make the decision for my father to be taken off life support. A DNR is a do not resuscitate.. that is the paperwork that is done ahead of time by the patient.. usually part of a living will or paperwork a person signs before entering the hospital (if in sound mind) if your family does not have a DNR this is left up to the patience physicians.. meaning they will resuscitate a person.. if the heart stops.. meaning whatever it takes to bring them back for the time being..weather it is going to be a good quality of life or not. DNR is the request of the patients wishes or if the patient gives a family member the authority to make the decision for them if they can not speak for themselves. Let me tell you it is one of the hardest things I have done in my life.. yet, my father is at peace.. I wish you luck in whatever decision you or your family have to make. If your just curious i suggest you speak to family members and get their wishes and see an attorney to get this all in place.. take care

They remove all the life support apparati (tubes, others) that have been inserted into the person..or that have been placed on the skin for monitoring. It means the end of medical intervention and all the life-prolonging efforts
