I don't know the difference but perhaps you could ask that question on the Chinese Chat section of the "Asia Finest Discussion Forum", I know there were several Teochew people mainly from Cambodia and Vietnam who very knowledgeable about their history and ancestral origin in Fujian. There is also a website that regroup the Teochew Chinese community, see link below as well.
