1. Engineering has become the saviour of humanity. Any large investment of capital will always wisely consult an array of engineers to determine the most efficient designs.

2. Yes. Consider hanging a light weight picture. Do you tear down the wall and constuct a columm to the basement to support the load? Or do you use a typical picture hanger? You are essentially engineering when you make that choice. To actually engineer that choice, you have do calculations to prove your intuition.

3. Engineering defines, mathematically, everyday life. A typical way engineering applies in everyday life is cooking. One has to calculate for the next meal the demand, the quantity and materials of food to meet said demand, the sanitary requirements, the required cooking tools, the heat transfer of the heating tool. One has to know how to measure out the materials and the heat. Should the project be a success, then a part of engineering is documenting the process for future use and record a recipe.

4. If you look around you, every structure, even the gutter, electronic device, communication infrastructure, power pole, house you live in, car you drive, battery you use is engineered.

Engineering is applying math to everyday problems. The way an engineer proves his recommendation is with mathematical calculations backed by laborotory tests. The engineer will also have to consider the level of public safety necessary and determine, and, if prudent, apply a factor of safety to his assumptions and calcs.

Engineering is what makes humans the dominant species. Think... There are species that weight 100's times more than us have 100's times the muscle and could to tell you the truth crush us without any effort. It was engineering that stopped this from happening and made humans rise above everything else.
Engineering is applied to everyone. I don't care if they're braindead and living off machines.
We have engineered many languages that allow us to communicate. How humane would humans be without a language to speak in?
I don't have a degree in anything or know much more about Engineering than you probably do but i'm sure of that.

Engineers make things that work reliably and with a minimum of material. Anyone can design things, but without engineering it will probably be heavy, inefficient and costly to produce. There are a lot of "self taught" engineers, but it is best to have formal training.
