Maybe your palate lacks sophistication. Maybe it was sour red wine!
Try something from the Berringer, Inglenook or Martini vineyards in Napa County, and stay away from Cabernet Sauvignon (a very rich and throaty wine that in fact most people find vinegary).
Or try Baron Philippe de Rothschild blended Bordeau Red, perhaps the top selling red wine in Europe -- now THAT'S what red wine is supposed to taste like!
And it's not expensive.

Dry wine is often an acquired taste. Most people like sweeter wine at first. There is a really big difference in dry/sweet wine so whatever you tried, you might like the other.
I drink wine because I love the way it tastes. I really have a problem with the snobs in the wine word. I don't believe there is an answer to the "best wine" questions. It all depends on what you like. I have had great $15 a bottle wines and really OK but not great $120 a bottle.
There is wine that I think tastes terrible too. So you can't judge them all based on only one.

I've had 50-100 different kinds of wine from Boone's Farm to expense account wines, and I am quite certain I don't like wine. If it takes 20 years to acquire a taste for something, I'm just not interested. If I'm going to drink something out of an oak barrel I'll do bourbon any day. You can taste and feel the difference from barrel to barrel of small batch bourbon.
The Newcastle comment is right on.

Red wine is often difficult for me to drink. The dryer wines just don't suit me. Try a White Zinfandel or a Riesling. They are much lighter, sweeter, and entirely more approachable.
Don't worry about your palate being "sophisticated," just find wines you think are tasty and start from there.

I hated wine when I first tried it (actually the first 20-30 times). The trick is to find someone who enjoys wine and get their suggestions, alternately determine what your tastes are and find a wine that matches your tastes.
So many people try chardonnay and don't like it (the taste of the oak barrel turns a lot of people off). If you like sweet flavors...apples, pears...try a reisling. Cherries and berries try a pinot noir. Just don't go to your local supermarket and get something on sale...probably not a good representation.

I'm not a big fan of wine either... but it's bitter and they make cheap wine.. in my pre-pregnancy days, if I was having a completely horrible day, I would just go buy a cheap bottle of wine as a little pick me up, because it doesn't have the horrible kick as hard liquor, and it's relatively inexpensive. (like $5 bottles) That's the only reason I have ever consumed wine.

The dryer the better. I can't explain it really, I luv it when it makes your cheeks suck in. I also luv really spicy food, lots of vegys, garlic, hard bread with sharp cheddar, and smoked salmon with cream cheese, and capers. I really think because comfort food has alot to do with MEMORIES, and these foods and drinks remind me of FAMILY, I love them so much. Taste and smell is so powerful. Dry red wine makes me remember the good times, the good life, the few but treasured moments we spend with the people we love so much.
