My 14 y.o. dog is suffering from "doggie dementia" . The latest manifestation of this has deprived me of a good nights sleep 2 nights in a row. She sleeps then she has then sudden starts and jumps up and looks around or stares into space. Then after a minute or so, she gets all nervous/restless trying to find a comfortable spot on the bed....usually near my head or on top of it. Putting her in another room is not an option - she will bark and scratch and otherwise be more miserable. I talked to my vet today and he suggested giving her 40 mg. of Benadryl. (She weighs 43 lbs.) He actually said the pills come in 25 and 50 mg. and that it was safe to give her 50 mg. I have Benadryl that I can give her but I'm terrified to do so....it just sounds weird to me. Also, is 1 capsule of benadryl = to 25 mg? I have 3 pills but I don't have the original box. Anybody know? Please weigh in people. I really need to sleep well tonight but I don't want to unwittingly harm my dog. Thanks.

Its OK, especially when ur vet said so. Vets actually prescribe it. But some vets tell owners to go out and buy it OTC b/c its cheaper. (I work for a vet, I'm a vet tech)
If you are nervous, give ur pet only 25mg. See how he reacts to it.
Good luck!

If it's brand-name Benadryl, and there's a "113" on the capsule, then it's 25mg. It should also be clear and pink colored.

The 50mg capsule is all pink and may have a "114" on it.

Benadryl can put you in such a stupor that while you're asleep you can't feel that you're losing bloodflow to your arm, or something. Therefore it shouldn't be overtaken.

If your vet told you that you could give the dog 40mg of Benadryl, then it would be safe -- otherwise he'd be in big trouble. Why would he say 40mg when that's such an odd number?

As everyone else who answered has said, yes it is safe to give your dog Benadryl. The general rule of thumb is to give 1 mg for every 1 pound of body weight. In your case, you would give your dog 45 mg. You need to consult w/ a veterinarian before doing this though. He may up the dosage or cut it back depending on the severity of your dog's allergies. You can always just call him and ask instead of taking your dog in, but I suggest taking him in for an exam to rule out fleas or mites. Your vet can also give her a steroid shot called Depo Medrol to help w/ the itching. Good luck and I hope your dog gets some relief soon!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7Qy

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

OTC Benadryl comes in 25 mg tablets or capsules. My dogs suffer from allergies and they take 25 mg of benedryl at bed time, during heavy allergy season. A friend's black lab is afraid of fireworks and their vet prescribed Benadryl for her at 4Th of July and New Year's. It won't hurt.

maybe you should take the benadryl and get some sleep.I don't think i would give a dog that old benadryl,it can sometimes have an opposite affect and cause a hyper reaction.

Yes, it is safe to give a dog benedryl. My dog is allergic to grass. She is 5 year old and 65 lbs. I give her 1 in the morning and 1 at nite to help her from itching so bad. I normally just put the pill in a piece of bread and she takes it right down.

Benadryl is safe for dogs. I agree with another answerer: try only one pill tonight.
My French Bulldog reacts to Benadryl "opposite" -->he gets wound up instead of drowsy, but it does dry up his phlegm nicely!
