This cat's poop runs the family out of the room and sometimes the next room. We love him, but I had to place an ad in the paper seeking a new home for him. Guest and family were getting sick. The family all run off when they'd see him head for the box.

smelly poop is often food related (or health related - see a vet for further help)
food - ok most cheap foods use alot of filler which upsets kitty tummies and makes smellier poop - plus the food is lower in nutrition so the kitty needs to eat more - so more poop and smellier poop too

all foods from grocery store or Wal Mart are cheap - use way too many fillers and have low nutrition
cats are TRUE carnivours - they need a REAL meat source as the NUMBER 1 ingredient in their food
so.. CHICKEN MEAL, TURKEY MEAL, or LAMB MEAL must be the first ingredient (most crappy foods use corn or by - products... which are beaks feet and feathers)
Rice should be second....
never give a cat MILK as it also makes smelly poop

use non-scented clumping litter or even better use the Silicone Beads

** reminder - better food = less poops.. it costs more but they eat way less

(YICK somebody recommended Science Diet -this food is crap, over priced for its quality becuase they paid for vet endorsment..)

YUCCA is a good ingredient for controlling odor also

It probably is a result of the food, but perhaps not for reasons some have listed. While corn should not be tops in the ingredient lists, corn usually provides a very digestible source of amino acids and proteins. But there are some cats who really don't do all that well with corn in their diet. Cats have a very short digestive system, and need the enzymes in the foods they eat to help digest their meals. A well digested meal comes out with minimal odor. A poorly digested meal comes out -- well you know already. Try out some different foods, with the ones that have meat tops in the ingredient list. I would get small portions of different catfoods so you don't have a lot of waste if the changes doesn't work. But this will take some time, since you really don't want to switch foods quickly, or you can really have problems such as diarrhea. You change the proportions slowly, usually over a week or so.

Is it "wrong" ??? How could you even ask such a question ?!?!?

I'm completely torn in responding to you.

On the one hand, I'd hate to see a loving pet end up traumatized by the switch to a new family - or worse, end up in a shelter.

On the other hand, I'm not sure you deserve your pet.

Everything everyone has said in here so far is right on the mark ... and don't you even dare cry out about how none of us understand you and how you've been treated meanly in here.

In addition to discussing the problem with your vet, changing the cat's diet and simply adding odor blocking products to the kitty litter, here is a product that would help with the odor:

Also, this is not the first time a question about kitty poop odor has appeared in Yahoo! Answers:

I sincerely wish your poor cat the very best of luck.

Would you get rid of your baby becuz it's poop stank? I think not. It is your responsibility as the human in this relationship to keep the litter box well maintained. There are a lot of items on the market to use in the litter to keep smells down and there is a new self emptying litter box on the market as well. Also maybe the food you are feeding the cat is causing the bad odor--try changing to another brand and see if that helps. Cora

I'll bet there's a person in your family who farts like a penguin crawled up inside him and died. Whenever he sees the cat head for the box, he cuts one loose and blames the cat. What is he going to do once you've thrown this cat away? If you ever watch Friends, you know the song: "Smelly Cat"-- and it's right-- try Purina One for Sensitive Systems, put the box as far away from family as possible, and remember that even with automatic litter boxes, you still have to clean them and change the litter sometimes. You might also see your vet to see if there is something wrong with him. If you do end up getting rid of him, please don't ever get another cat-- you don't deserve one, and cats don't deserve to be put out of their homes because of idiots like you..

Yes because if you loved him you wouldn't give him away. You should first think about all the things you like about the cat and whenever you smell the smell think of those advanages. Also talk to the vet to see if it is an health related problem and if can suggest anything. Also they sell kitty perfume that helps the whole cat smell better. And also try giving the cat a bath more often.

Dude... That is So Mean. You can't tell me that you didn't know your cats poo was gonna smell. You must really not love your cat if thats the reason you need to pull to get ridda him. I agree with you though, you should get rid of him and give him to someone who would really love him for his personality, and not for the way his poop smells. If your not willing to just try a different food, then I would think it's wrong for you to keep your kitty. Damn girl, and change the ****** litter!!! Scoop it once a day and THROW IT AWAY. P.S. Don't act like Your **** don't stink... It's a good thing your parents weren't thinkin like that when they had YOU.

I think you should look for alternatives rather than giving your poor cat away. Maybe something in his diet is causing his bathroom breaks to be so unpleasant. Take him to the vet and re-evaluate what type of food or brand you are giving him. Think how sad and betrayed your poor cat would feel if he had to try to make a new life for himself! Believe it or not, animals have feelings too.. please look at other options! You don't want him to be sent off to a shelter where he may not have another chance to find a good home.. or something worse.. !

You are feeding him the wrong food then, something doesn't agree with him.

I think that is a lousy reason to get rid of an animal. You suck. Over 70% of the cats and over 50% of the dogs that go to shelters in the US are euthanized, and if because of selfish idiots like you who decide they have to have a pet and then "it's poop stinks" because you feed it table scraps or something else ignorant.

Yes, it is wrong. And do you know what? You probably are doing the right thing by seeking a new home for your cat because it's obvious you are not a responsible or mature cat owner.
