Our staff does not recommend rawhide for any dog under the age of 1 year. Digestibility is questionable, and I've seen way too many dogs choking on large chunks that have been semi-chewed. It's not fun to stick your hand down your dogs' throat to retrieve a frothy foamy sticky hunk of gooey cattle skin !!
I've also encountered a high percentage of dogs who react to rawhide by having random bouts of messy diarrhea and horrible gas.
Better choices for puppies would be BullWrinkles, Greenies, Dentabones, all natural beef bones that have been baked and/or boiled to kill off bacteria.
FYI, puppy treats (bones, cookies, training treats etc) should not make up more than 10% of puppy's daily food intake as it might interfere with vitamins and minerals from his puppy food.
Best Wishes

Rawhide is hard to digest for puppies and often causes diarrhea. You also have to be careful of buying rawhide from other countries that don't have the standards that the US does. The best thing for puppies is Nylabones (Made from Cornstarch).

I am not a big fan of rawhide for puppies or adult dogs. You may want to look into alternative chewing items that are safe and that do not break into pieces or splinter. A good choice is a kong.

It is fine to feed them rawhide when they are 6 months old. I do recommend, however, that it be a form that is easy chew. This way you will not damage the puppy's teeth.

I have fed rawhide before, but not ever again. My dog choked on it, and threw up a frothy slimy mess. I cannot cite my sources, but Rawhide is not good for dogs. I also recommend a Kong toy, a nyla bone or just plain bones... I would wait for 6-8 months for real bones though. My dogs LOVE the marrow- good for them too.

Rawhides are not good for puppies. They can break off pieces and choke on them. Try nylabones. The best teething toy I have found is the Kong.

I don't recommend rawhide period. Get a kong toy and put treats in it that the puppy has to work to get. Satisfies chewing and they get a treat.

when their stomach has become accustomed to different types of things is all I can say
but beware, too many rawhides and letting them sit around for a few days allows them to become breeding grounds for all sorts of viruses and bacteria... I didn't know this and just this weekend, my dog got sick - he is on amoxicilin for the next 10 days.. if you let your pup have a raw hide, when he is done with it, wash it off and put it in the fridge until the next time you want him to have it
