Absolutely! My 1/2 breed Siamese understands NO, come here, and affectionate baby talk. However, his characteristics are rather dog-like because he also listens & obeys.
Baby was raised with another cat and a collie, thus his name. Henry & Spot also appeared to understand when they were still alive.
I think it is great a guy is a cat owner. My husband is finally reforming since Baby is such a good boy!
Keep the lines of communication open & total emersion will eventually work.

Cats, dogs and other pets cannot understand human speech like humans understand humans talking. However, there is some great research on this which indicates that dogs and cats understand and feel the emotions of humans. That is, they understand your tone and intent, even though they don't really understand your words. They do learn to associate words with certain meanings like "bad!" but probably not what the word literally means...
Kind of a round about answer but hopefully it gives you what you were looking for. Your cat does understand you, but only to a point. :-)

I fully believe that cats understand speech. Everyday I call my buddy by a different name. Not because I'm trying to confuse him but because of my mood or his doings. His name is Bandit but he knows Baby, Fat Boy, Heffer. I dont necessarily have to be looking at him or speaking it in the same tone inorder for him to understand that I'm calling him. I will say at night while sitting in the chair facing the computer "come on "whatever name I chose to call him that day" lets go to bed" and he runs for the middle of the bed. Cats generally are smart animals however, we dont get to always see it because they are so independent and do it on their time.

My kittie understands nite-nite, chow- chow, no, her name, her dogs name,(rosie) play with rosie, sit and a lot of other stuff like that. She's 2 years old , has always stayed in the house and sleeps with me. We've had her since she was a tiny kitten, and I talk to her all the time. (And by the way-- she's the only cat I've ever saw that will sit on comand-- if she wants to!) Have a good day!

Cats are very smart my cat will walk with me, like a dog. If he is outside and he hears my car he will run for the apt. I am not sure if he understands the actual words or the tone of my voice more.

if I reported to you "blkjdoluisre" each time I gave you nutrition, you may come to comprehend that gibberish meant you have been going to be fed. Does that mean you recognize the be conscious? particular. perhaps no longer each and every solitary syllable, yet you will learn the association. My cats have some words they be conscious of the association of. i do no longer could desire to be doing something, yet when I say mattress time, they head to the mattress, and if I say treats, they dance around the cabinet that has the treats in it. I even have faith there is verbal substitute on a distinctive point. there have been countless cases i've got made requests of my cats that they did. this is freaky while it happens even nonetheless it has befell sufficient that I no longer have faith this is barely co-occurrence

i think it may be possible but i believe its more the tone of your voice and nonverbal actions than what your saying. My cats will respond differently depending on my tone of voice and my actions. like if i pat the couch and snicker they know to come and sit near me. Or if i put my finger up like im signaling 1 minute theyll sit there and wait for me. I say its more tone of voice but im not denying the possibility of them understanding human speech. I mean they are smarter than humans by far. Its hard to say.

I think its 100% possible. I have grown up with cats, and mine answer me. I ask Tiger if she wants food and she meows and nods her head. If its bedtime, she waits for me to get into bed and meows and purrs softly till I go to sleep. I really do think that they understand us. Tiger is also known as my Angel Puss,b/c she really is an Angel, I love her so much. She's a great kitten and a wonderful friend.

cats are semi social animals, so they understand that they are being communicated with. they don't have anywhere near the brain complexity to understand something like speech. they have instinctual reactions to tone of voice and body language, which is true of any species that has parental care involved. essentially, ownership of a cat artificially extends the kitten and parent relationship, ie, they see you as their mom until the get older, when they start regarding you as their kitten. thats why they bring you lizards and mice, they are trying to teach you to hunt (and you are failing miserably). to them, there is no contradiction, they are purely instinctual and don't actually think. but they like it when you speak to them, in fact the more you talk to them, the more they will "talk" back. they are imitating your behavior, as they would their parents.

Cats don't really understand what you are saying, but pick up on tones, you can say awww your such a sweet beautifull little kitty in a nasty way and she would be upset by it even though what you are saying is nice.
