Best way to get honorably discharged is to just finish your term. Even if you had minor issues in your time served you will still be discharged honorably. Also there are medical discharges and hardship discharges. Sometimes if being in the Army truly makes it difficult for you to care for someone(just an example) you can recieve a hardship discharge.

Another way is to appeal your discharge. If you have been discharged on an other than honorable discharge you can go before a board and appeal your case to attempt to get your discharge upgraded.

A medical discharge is just that. It's not bad, but it's not an honorable discharge. You pretty much have to finish your term of service in order to get an honorable discharge.

When you finish and you no longer wish to serve, I believe....like resigning. Nothing happens, however if you would like to join back up again, you would have to re-do some of your training depending on how long you were in and how long you've been gone.
