Yes, I did know that. When my now 25 year old son was 16, he had a changing mole on his back removed and it turned out to be Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Just after his 17th birthday, he had surgery to remove the cancerous skin and also had several lymph nodes removed in his neck and under his arm. We had many doctor's visits prior to and after the surgery. At one of the appointments with our son's dermatologist, he spoke to my son about future protection against skin cancer and we learned that any tanning of the skin is considered damaged skin. Damaged skin has an increased risk of developing cancer. He advised my son and the rest of our family to never use a tanning salon because of the increased risk. Our family is very careful about applying sun screen year round, wearing hats, and not spending excessive time in the sun. We are thankful that our son is currently cancer free. He is diligent in checking his moles monthly and seeing his dermatologist yearly for an all-over body check.
