The date you are refering to is Feburay 17, 2009. It is huge, millions upon millions of households accorss America are going to wake up on that day, attempt to turn on their old non digital TVs and find that........absolutely nothing has changed. You see, what is happening on that day is that over the air signals are going to be only digital, analog over the air will cease to exist. Of course about 90%+ of America has cable or satellite, so over the air signals really don't matter to them at all. If you do still get over the air, then you will need a new TV, or a simple digital conversion box, so honestly there is nothing to really worry about.

HDTVs are becoming more and more affordable. It is in the best interest of the manufactures to constantly lower the cost of HDTV because they want to sell more units. HDTV tuners come with the ability to down convert the 1080i signal to 480i which is the same quality as a DVD player. The good news is that there are plenty of affordible HDTVs on the market now and there will be even more in 2008/9 when they make it manditory for broadcasting companies. If you want an affordible HDTV, check out some of the new tube-tvs (CRTs) and DLPs. I think you'll be surprised with what you can get for your money these days.

Actually it's 2009 when the FCC allows TV stations to shut down the old NTSC signal and only transmit the ATSC Hi Def signal.....

But here's the good news....NOW you can buy an SDTV!!

That's a Lo-Def TV set with the Hi-Def ATSC tuner built in.....
Dirt Cheap TV that will work in the Future.
