I know that everyone says that you shouldn't buy puppies from pet stores for a variety of really good reasons. But my question is - don't those dogs deserve a loving home also? If no one buys them - what happens to them?

Not all puppies sold at a pet store come from "breeding mills". and not all have health problems. Our dog came from a mall pet store and she is the sweetest, calmest and healthiest dog I have seen!

On the other hand, our 2nd dog came from the pound. Born and raised on the streets for about 3 months - of course we weren't told this until we were ready to sign the papers and AFTER the kids fell in love w/ her. At 2 1/2 yrs old, she is still a "street" dog. She will always have that mentality.

There are problems no matter where you get the dog from.
1) Pet store- possible puppy mill dog.
2) Pound - possible abuse, no accurate history about the pet.
3) Breeder- don't forget, they are also in it for the $$$ in most cases.

A better option for those who are against pet store type of sale is to get either state or local laws passed making it illegal to sell dogs in this manner.

Good Luck in finding a dog...no matter which source you choose to buy from.

If a puppy at the pet store isn't selling, first the pet store will reduce the price. Eventually if the puppy isn't sold, it will be returned to the mill that it came from. While this is unfortunate for that particular puppy, it will save future puppies down the road. When puppies aren't selling it makes the owner or manager of the pet store think that the costs associated with stocking puppies is not worth the price they can sell puppies at, and they will discontinue the practice. If the mills don't have a market to supply to, they will go out of business.

If you get your puppy from a pet store like PetSmart and PetCo, the puppies for sale are not purchased from puppy mills. Rescue organizations and some animal shelters utilize space in these stores to find homes for puppies, dogs, cats and kittens who are rescued or who have been relinquished by people who could not keep them. Some pet stores do support puppy mills but some DO NOT. I have three dogs that are all rescues. Two came from PetSmart and were offered for adoption by the City Pound where I live. They are great dogs..all three.

All puppies sold at Pet Stores come from mills and/or irresponsible breeders (Responsible breeders NEVER sell puppies in pet stores).

Every time you buy a puppy from a pet store you are encouraging the mill or byb to produce more. This leads to over breeding of the parents and pushing out more pups. While some peopel luck out and their pet store puppy is even tempered and healthy many more end up with nasty tempered, unhealthy pups.
Pet Store puppies often aren't even registered with a legit registry. They usually are registered with such scam registries as ACA, ACC, CKC (Continental or Canine Kennel Club), World Wide. Also pet store puppies usually cost as much if not more then a puppy purchased from a responsible breeder.
Puppies not sold usually end up in rescues/shelters and sometimes end up in the breeding program of other mills/byb.

Some Pet Stores Like PetCo don't sell puppies but rather showcase adoptable puppies & dogs from area shelters & rescues.

ok its a bit of a tough love thing.. if no body would buy them then the cycle of cruelty would end and the pet stores would have to give them away or to the SPCA and wouldnt support the cruel puppy mill industry again.. a few puppies suffering is better than MILLIONS of dogs and puppies suffering which is what is currently happening....
I knew a puppy mill dog.. she was breeding stock and was "rescued" when the puppy mill owner died.. her health was terrible and she was TERRIFIED of grass.. having never existed outside the steel walls of her cage.. which was on top of a cage houseing another dog.. she was bred back to back over and over - she wasnt in good shape needless to say.. THIS is the kind of dogs that exist because people continue to buy from pet stores

the pet stores are lying and telling people "we dont get from puppy mills" but lets fact it.. NO reputable breeder would EVER sell to a pet store.. nor would they need to hide anonymously behind a pet store...a few stores are starting to get animals from adoption places like the SPCA.. but ok thats not what you are asking

if no one buys those puppies.. then the cycle will be ended.. people are fooling themself if they think they are "rescuing" pups from pet stores - because infact they are condemming others to the same fate by encouraging and supporting a very cruel industry

One look at my dear sweet Luci Lu, a five year old shih tzu rescued from a puppy mill, lets you know that you don't want a puppy mill puppy. She had a litter every time she was in season. Her teats almost touch the ground and she is not sure of herself. She is terrified of anything and everything. All she knows how to do is have puppies and take care of them.

You're right all puppies do deserve a loving home, but you can find a rescue animal worthy of your love.

I know it sounds harsh but if you don't buy puppies from a pet store than that causes the pet store to stop selling puppies. These dogs come from horrible places called puppy mills where dogs are kept caged and pregnant their whole lives. So if we stop buying dogs from pet stores puppy mills will hopefully shut down. It sucks for the dogs that don't get bought, but it's better in the long run.

Sure they deserve a loving home but those dogs were bred for money and will have a ton of health problems. The puppies they sell are just going to be replaced by cute, fluffy, lonely pups with the same amount of health problems. Buying them will just encourage the making of puppy mill dogs.

If they don't get sold - they will either:

a) Send them to another store of theirs.
b) Send them back to the miller/broker.
c) kill them.

If you want to save a dog's life - go to your local (R)SPCA and adopt one of their homeless dogs.

I'm a breeder and I think it is safe to buy a pup from a pet store, but only if you get a health guarantee on that puppy for at least one year, and a guaranteed refund of purchase price if things show any different..If the pet store can't give you this, then would suggest that you find a responsible breeder that will,or go to your local SPCA.

I would assume that you are not u.k based. you don't find puppy's in shops here. But if you feel that you want to "rescue" a dog from one and your home is suitable and you can afford it (also its not just and impulse) i would say go for it and good on you.but get the puppy checked out by a vet asap.good luck
