My husband's doctor switched him from Effexor 300 mg a day to Bupropion 300 mg a day. The doctor didn't say anything about tapering off the Effexor. Is it safe to just switch and are there side effects if you do?

If it's done under your Dr's instructions and your husband is being monitored, then I don't see why not. His Dr. did go to Medical school and I'm going to guess that he/she has done this with other patients before, so I wouldn't worry.

I think some of your uncertainty lies with a gap in knowledge. I use to feel the same way about taking/switching/combining meds, but after you read up and educate yourself, you'll feel much more comfortable.

Here's some info on the two drugs.

Both Effexor and Wellbutrin are part of the antidepressant family of MRI's (Multiple Reuptake Inhibitors). They both chase the same two neurotransmitters (dopamine and neuropinephrine). They are designed to prohibit the natural recycling process of these two neurotransmitters so that they marinates in your hubbies brain, because he's not producing enough of either both or one of the two.

One of Wellbutrin's side effects is that it makes you hornier. That may be good or bad for your marriage, I'm not really sure. Also, since Wellbutrin metabolizes heavily in the liver, I would suggest your husband not drink while on the meds. Lastly, Effexor is the toughest of the Antidepressant drugs to wean off of - its just friggin aweful. Yes, antidepressants are physically addicting. Your hubbie will have an easier time stopping Wellbutrin than Effexor.

There are a host of other pros/cons based on certain mental disorders, but you didn't tell us what he was diagnosed with.

It appears that you're in good hands and I hope that everything goes well.

I'd double check with your husband's doctor or pharmacist. When I was taking Effexor I was weaned off, and weaned up on the buproprion. I was less concerned with getting off of the Effexor as I was starting a high dose of the buproprion due to the drug sometimes causing seizures.

Drug suitable hair loss starts a minimum of three months after taking off the offending medicine. ISearched the nationwide library of medication for hair loss and wellbutrin - i got here upon no references so if it occurs it hasn't been stated. this does no longer advise it hasn't and ought to't ensue. See a dermatologist for an opinion.

No, Wellbutrin and effexor are in the same family and there should be no side effects if the dosage is the same.
