I hate to sound rude, love, but American is not a language. English is the language we speak. You can even go as far as to say we speak American English as opposed to British English. However, it is, nonetheless, English.
Secondly, the reason there are so many languages should be obvious, dear. America is a newer country than most of the other nations of our world. Languages such as Spanish and German were originated a LOT earlier historically than English was. It is unfair to expect everyone to speak English. In fact, English is one of the hardest languages to learn as a second language. If we were to have a universal language, it should be something a lot easier, like Spanish. Again, not to sound rude, but this was sort of a dumb question.

I sure hope this isn't a serious question! Anyway, there is no such thing as American language. Americans speak English, although there are some differences between American English and British English.

Because we are all from different nations, plus the world would be a lot less iteresting place if we all spoke the same language. Have you ever noticed the differences even between British and American English? Have a listen sometime...

Yeah, first, american is not a language. Second, the most spoken language is mandarine. The second most spoken is spanish.
