Does a person require a deity to maintain a sense of morals? If we were to (hypothetically, of course) discover that there is no god, then how would our lives be changed in any way?

The reason I ask this is because I don't understand why some church-goers want to keep pestering me with "you need Jesus." I am perfectly healthy, both physically and mentally. I don't believe that I am dependent on any type of deity, although I do believe one exists (deistic thinker here, lol).

No, not all of us do. And god seems to talk some people into doing and believing really crazy and stupid things. At least people THINK god is talking to them.

Glad I'm not one of them. I don't need threats of hell to prevent me from killing others.

No people do not need a god. I am atheist and i am certainly moral. I am a vegetarian, going vegan, because i don't feel it is right to kill unnecessarily. I have never broken the law or hurt someone intentionally. I too am perfectly healthy physically and mentally and am deity free. As for Susan S's remark about how you need a deity to keep the world from going haywire, and then saying that it almost is. Over 50% of the world believes in some deity or another, probably far over that, and the world is chaos, religion doesn't stop the chaos, religion fuels it.

No you don't need a god to be a good person. Gods fuel some of the nastiest people on earth. They kill, rape, torture, and lots of other things in the name of their religion. Parents kill their own children because "god" told them too. "God" is just an excuse for some peoples behavior. People without a god (i think) tend to be very loving people who care about others, do good things, want peace, and they treat other like they want to be treated. People rely on a "god" to keep them on the right track to "heaven", what happened to being good because it felt good, not just because you don't want to go to "hell". What really makes me wonder is the priests and bischops and other church clergy that molest children. Aren't they supposed to be devoted to god? I wouldn't want to even be affiliated with anything or anyone who would do such a thing. Religion is just comfort, that's all.

A person does not require any deity to have morals. Having morals should not be out of fear of hell, but more of love for people.

Do you need air to breathe, food to sustain your body and water to drink? Of course you also need spiritual "food" and sustenance as well. Try going to a good Bible believing church to see if there's something you might find helpful and perhaps start reading a Bible to try to see just what God wants for you to understand about having a personal relationship with Him. Please understand, I'm NOT talking about religion! I'm talking about getting to know GOD personally. Yes, it really IS possible. It changed my life. I've never regretted it, and I've never been the same!

I formed my own code of ethics and I decided what morals are right. I thought for myself all the way, I never followed anything anyone has told me without finding out about it myself. So religion doesn't ever feature in my life. I don't need it or want it nor do I need or want a 'god' to help me understand what I can't explain.

I'm extremely happy and healthy and looking forward to enjoying my life. All this is achieved with 0% god and 0% religion. Some people who need help with their lives find religion.

A person definitely does not need a god to be moral or all atheists would be immoral and that isn't so. however, people who are afraid of the nothingness of death without afterlife need god to be immortal themselves. the morality issue is just a bonus for believing. we've always been moral in general because anthropologically, it was good for the tribe and the hunters/gatherers.

yes...and here is why.

whithout an authoritative law....every man has their own truth. and thus, every man s righteous in his own eyes. every man thinks his own way is best.

but take a look around you...most people live according to their own terms, and if you trace it back enough it is all because of sin. we break the natural law that is written in our heart and stamped on our conscience.

you're healthy here and now. but one day your short life on this earth will be no more...and you will be enter eternity. that is what people mean when they tell you you need jesus. you need jesus for eternal salvation. but pride gets in the way. trust me....i know.

Yes I NEED God! and I thank the heavens for the oppertunity to have faith, and have God in my heart.

to believe in God, one must have faith.
faith is the substance of something hoped for and yet unseen.

This helps me each day of my life.

If you are healthy and mentally sound, and feel you do not need God, then that is between you and your maker- but nobody has the right to push it down your throat!

sharing and witnessing to you is one thing, but I cant stand those who are self righteous and push it till it makes one sick!
